Fire Breaks Out at Mahakumbh in Prayagraj

A major fire broke out at the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday. No casualties have been reported so far. The fire started in Sector 19 of the Mahakumbh Tent City. Authorities believe it was caused by an explosion of cooking cylinders.

Firefighters Battle the Blaze

Kumbh Mela’s chief fire officer, Pramod Sharma, confirmed that 15 fire tenders were immediately deployed to control the blaze. The fire spread to 18 tents, but the efforts of the fire teams helped contain it.

No Casualties Reported

Prayagraj district magistrate Ravindra Kumar confirmed that the fire began around 4:30 PM in a tent belonging to Gita Press. He assured the public, saying, “There is no information of any casualty. The situation is under control.”

Leaders Respond to the Incident

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath acted quickly after learning of the fire. He visited the site to speak with officials and the firefighting teams. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also called Adityanath to inquire about the situation and the ongoing response efforts.

Social Media Reactions

The official Maha Kumbh 2025 social media handle posted, “Very sad! The fire incident at #MahaKumbh has shocked everyone. The administration is ensuring immediate relief and rescue operations. We pray Maa Ganga for everyone's safety.” The Samajwadi Party also shared its grief on X, urging the government to speed up relief and rescue operations.

Maha Kumbh 2025 Continues

The Maha Kumbh Mela, which started on January 13, will run until February 26. By January 18, over 77.2 million pilgrims had visited the Sangam Triveni for the holy dip. On Sunday alone, more than 46.95 lakh devotees took part in the 'snan'.
