Team Gonasika triumphed 4-2 over the Tamil Nadu Dragons in a Pool B match of the Men's Hero Hockey India League 2024-25. The match was held at the Birsa Munda Stadium in Rourkela on Saturday. The goals for Gonasika came from Araijeet Singh Hundal (14’), Jack Waller (45’), Tim Howard (50’), and Chandanda Nikkin Thimmaiah (51’). On the other hand, Amit Rohidas (8’) and Tom Craig (56’) scored for the Dragons. Despite the defeat, the Tamil Nadu Dragons maintained their position at the top of the points table with 17 points from nine games. Meanwhile, Gonasika stayed in seventh place with 10 points from nine matches.

Early Action and Quick Response

Gonasika began the match with an aggressive approach. They earned a penalty corner in the first minute but were unable to convert it. Subsequently, the Tamil Nadu Dragons swiftly turned defense into offense and earned a penalty corner. Rohidas (8’) took advantage of this opportunity and scored, giving the Dragons a 1-0 lead. However, Gonasika responded promptly. Struan Walker passed to Araijeet Singh Hundal (14’), who made no mistake in finding the back of the net with a powerful shot, leveling the score at 1-1. Thus, the first quarter ended with both teams tied.

Moving into the second quarter, both teams engaged in early exchanges. Gonasika had multiple opportunities to take the lead but failed to convert two penalty corners. Despite their attacking efforts, the score remained 1-1 as the second quarter ended.

Breaking the Tie in the Third Quarter

As the third quarter began, Gonasika pushed forward with renewed energy. They earned a penalty corner, but Tamil Nadu Dragons' goalkeeper David Harte made a crucial save. Subsequently, the Dragons increased their attacking intensity, earning two consecutive penalty corners, but failed to convert. It was then that Gonasika broke the deadlock. Jack Waller (45’) cleverly deflected a pass from Manpreet Singh to convert a penalty corner, putting Gonasika ahead 2-1 as the third quarter concluded.

Gonasika Seals Victory in the Final Quarter

With a 2-1 lead, Gonasika came out strong in the final quarter. Tim Howard (50’) capitalized on a perfectly placed pass from Jack Waller, scoring to extend Gonasika’s lead to 3-1. Just a minute later, Chandanda Nikkin Thimmaiah (51’) added another goal, making it 4-1 after a great team effort. In response, the Tamil Nadu Dragons intensified their attack. Tom Craig (56’) scored, reducing the deficit to 4-2. However, Gonasika held their ground and secured a well-earned victory. Ultimately, Team Gonasika triumphed 4-2 over the Tamil Nadu Dragons. Despite the Dragons' late push, Gonasika's strong performance in the final quarters ensured their victory.
