A massive stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj early Wednesday led to the deaths of 30 people and left 60 others injured. The incident occurred when a huge crowd gathered at the Sangam area to take a holy dip on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya.
Officials Confirm Casualties
DIG Mahakumbh, Vaibhav Krishna, confirmed the tragic event. He stated, “Thirty people have lost their lives in the Maha Kumbh stampede that took place between 1-2 AM. Twenty-five victims have been identified, and efforts are underway to identify the remaining five.”Chaos and Barricade Breach
The situation spiraled out of control when devotees broke through barricades to reach the holy dip site. As a result, several women collapsed on the spot, triggering widespread panic. The stampede intensified as unconscious devotees fell, leading to further injuries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences to the victims' families. He assured that the local administration in Prayagraj is providing all possible assistance. Speaking at a rally in Delhi, he said, “We lost some good souls in the tragic incident at Kumbh. Some people have also been hurt. I convey my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.” He further added, “I am in constant touch with the Uttar Pradesh government. Due to Mauni Amavasya, crores of devotees have gathered. For some time, the bathing process was halted, but now pilgrims are resuming their holy dip.
