A massive stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj early Wednesday led to the deaths of 30 people and left 60 others injured. The incident occurred when a huge crowd gathered at the Sangam area to take a holy dip on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya.

Officials Confirm Casualties

DIG Mahakumbh, Vaibhav Krishna, confirmed the tragic event. He stated, “Thirty people have lost their lives in the Maha Kumbh stampede that took place between 1-2 AM. Twenty-five victims have been identified, and efforts are underway to identify the remaining five.”

Chaos and Barricade Breach

The situation spiraled out of control when devotees broke through barricades to reach the holy dip site. As a result, several women collapsed on the spot, triggering widespread panic. The stampede intensified as unconscious devotees fell, leading to further injuries. Many victims are now receiving treatment at Bailey Hospital and Swaroop Rani Medical College.

Prime Minister Expresses Grief

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences to the victims' families. He assured that the local administration in Prayagraj is providing all possible assistance. Speaking at a rally in Delhi, he said, “We lost some good souls in the tragic incident at Kumbh. Some people have also been hurt. I convey my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.” He further added, “I am in constant touch with the Uttar Pradesh government. Due to Mauni Amavasya, crores of devotees have gathered. For some time, the bathing process was halted, but now pilgrims are resuming their holy dip. Once again, I extend my condolences.”

Uttar Pradesh CM Addresses the Incident

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath provided more details about the incident. He explained that the stampede occurred between 1 AM and 2 AM when some devotees climbed over barricades at Akhara Marg. “They were critically injured and rushed to the hospital for immediate treatment,” he stated after a high-level meeting in Lucknow.

Government Strengthens Medical Support

The Uttar Pradesh government has deployed over 1,000 medical professionals to the Maha Kumbh area. According to an official statement, each sector of the fair now has facilities for minor and major surgeries. Additionally, a super-specialty hospital in Mahakumbh Nagar has stationed 300 specialist doctors to handle emergencies.

Authorities on High Alert

Officials are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further mishaps. Security has been reinforced, and crowd control measures have been intensified to ensure the safety of pilgrims. The government continues to provide assistance to the injured and their families. This tragic incident underscores the urgent need for better crowd management at religious gatherings. Authorities are now working tirelessly to restore order and provide medical aid to those affected.
