Ratan Tata’s recently revealed will has shocked his inner circle. He left a third of his remaining assets, worth over ₹500 crore, to an unexpected individual. This person, Mohini Mohan Dutta, is a travel entrepreneur from Jamshedpur. Consequently, the Tata family and close associates were surprised by this decision, according to reports.
Who is Mohini Mohan Dutta?
Although Mohini Mohan Dutta’s link to Ratan Tata was not well-known, sources say he was a trusted associate for many years. Dutta’s family owned a travel agency called Stallion, which merged with Taj Services in 2013. Before the merger, the Dutta family owned 80% of Stallion, while Tata Industries held the remaining stake. Additionally, Dutta served as a director at TC Travel Services, which was previously linked to Thomas Cook.
A Long-Standing Bond
Dutta often spoke of his close relationship with the Tata family. At Ratan Tata’s funeral in October 2024, Dutta recalled their first meeting in Jamshedpur. “We first met in Jamshedpur at the Dealers' Hostel when he was 24. He helped me out and really built me up,” Dutta said. Their friendship lasted more than six decades. Furthermore, Dutta was invited to Ratan Tata’s birth anniversary celebration in December 2024.
Philanthropy and Legacy
Ratan Tata dedicated much of his wealth to charity. His half-sisters, who were also named in the will, are considering donating their share. Tata established the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation and the Ratan Tata Endowment Trust to support charitable causes.
Ratan Tata passed away in October 2024 at the age of 86. Under his leadership, the Tata Group grew to become one of India’s largest companies, with annual revenues over $100 billion.
