Atishi Resigns After AAP’s Defeat: BJP’s Next Move – Who Will Lead Delhi?
Atishi resigned as Delhi's caretaker Chief Minister after AAP's defeat in the assembly elections. With BJP's victory, the focus shifts to who will be appointed as the new Chief Minister.
On Sunday, February 9, Delhi's outgoing Chief Minister Atishi resigned, following the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) decisive win in the state assembly elections. She submitted her resignation to Lt Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena.

AAP’s Crushing Defeat

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) suffered a significant defeat, losing 40 seats compared to their 2020 tally. From 62 seats, they dropped to just 22. High-profile leaders like Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia lost their seats in the elections.

Atishi Holds on to Kalkaji Seat

Despite AAP’s defeat, Atishi retained her Kalkaji seat. She defeated BJP's Ramesh Bidhuri by over 3,500 votes. However, her victory margin was significantly lower than in 2020, where she won by over 11,000 votes.

Who Will Be Delhi’s Next CM?

The BJP, after 26 years, is back in power in Delhi. They won 48 out of 70 seats in the February 5 elections. However, the party has not yet announced their choice for Chief Minister.

Parvesh Sahib Singh’s Candidacy

BJP is expected to stake its claim for power once Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from his foreign visit. Parvesh Sahib Singh, son of former Delhi CM Sahib Singh Verma, is a likely candidate for CM. He gained attention after defeating Arvind Kejriwal in New Delhi.

Vijendra Gupta: Another Strong Contender

Vijendra Gupta is another contender for CM. He retained his seat in Rohini and served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly. His selection could appeal to the business community in Delhi.
