Indian Super League 2024-25: FC Goa Dominates Kerala Blasters with 2-0 Victory
FC Goa dominated Kerala Blasters with a 2-0 win, controlling possession, creating key chances, and securing three crucial points in the Indian Super League 2024-25.
FC Goa delivered a commanding 2-0 victory over Kerala Blasters FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa on Saturday in the Indian Super League 2024-25. The Gaurs controlled possession with 52.2% and fired six shots on target, while the visitors managed only one. With this win, they climbed to 42 points, strengthening their grip on second place. Furthermore, they delayed Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s title celebrations, as an FC Goa loss would have confirmed the Mariners as League Winners. Now, Jose Molina’s squad must defeat Odisha FC on Sunday to keep their title hopes alive.

Guarrotxena Creates Early Opportunities

Right from the start, Iker Guarrotxena played a crucial role in dismantling Kerala Blasters’ defense. He sent a precise through ball past the defenders, perfectly setting up Dejan Drazic inside the 18-yard box. Drazic adjusted well and aimed for goal. However, goalkeeper Kamaljit Singh reacted quickly to make a reflex save in the bottom left corner in the 38th minute.

Breaking the Deadlock in the Second Half

After halftime, FC Goa intensified their attacks. They built up play patiently from the right flank before switching to the left, where Drazic unleashed a powerful strike. Kamaljit managed to deflect the ball, but his incomplete save allowed Guarrotxena to seize the rebound. Consequently, the Spanish forward confidently placed the ball into the bottom right corner in the 46th minute, securing the lead for FC Goa.

Sealing the Victory with a Second Goal

The Gaurs maintained their momentum after the opener. In the 73rd minute, Carl McHugh made an impressive forward run through the middle before passing to Aakash Sangwan near the box. Sangwan carried the ball forward and delivered a well-timed pass to Guarrotxena inside the penalty area. Instead of shooting, Guarrotxena smartly squared the ball to Yasir, who easily tapped it into the bottom right corner. As a result, FC Goa extended their lead.

Defensive Strength and Final Attempts

Meanwhile, McHugh continued creating offensive plays. In the 79th minute, he delivered a sharp pass to Brison Fernandes outside the box. Fernandes attempted a top-corner shot, but the ball sailed over the post. Even in the closing moments, FC Goa’s defense held firm. They maintained possession, stretched Kerala Blasters’ backline with quick lateral passes, and comfortably saw out the match. Ultimately, they secured a clean sheet and earned all three points.

Key Performer of the Match

Undoubtedly, Iker Guarrotxena (FC Goa) played a pivotal role in FC Goa’s success. He completed 24 of his 28 passes, created three goal-scoring opportunities, scored one goal, and provided an assist.

What’s Next?

Looking ahead, FC Goa will take on Punjab FC on February 27, while Kerala Blasters FC will face Jamshedpur FC on March 1. From the very beginning, FC Goa launched aggressive attacks, creating opportunities through open play and set-pieces. In the 20th minute, a corner led to Mohammad Yasir delivering a pinpoint cross to Carl McHugh inside the box. McHugh connected with a header but sent the ball just wide of the right post.
