Varun Chakravarthy Shines as India Crushes New Zealand’s Chase
India defeated New Zealand by 44 runs, securing a semi-final spot against Australia in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
India secured a semi-final spot in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 by defeating New Zealand by 44 runs on Sunday, March 2, in Dubai. Spinner Varun Chakravarthy dominated with a five-wicket haul, dismantling New Zealand’s batting order.

India and New Zealand Reach Semi-Finals

As a result of this victory, India topped Group A with six points. They will now face Australia, the second-placed team from Group B. Meanwhile, despite the loss, New Zealand also advanced and will play against Group B leaders South Africa in the second semi-final.

India Fights Back After Early Collapse

New Zealand won the toss and chose to bowl first. As expected, their bowlers took advantage of the conditions and struck early. India struggled, losing three quick wickets and slipping to 30/3 in the powerplay. However, Shreyas Iyer played a crucial knock, scoring 79 runs. Meanwhile, Axar Patel provided steady support with 42 runs. Together, they built a vital 98-run partnership, helping India recover.

Even after Iyer and KL Rahul (23) fell in quick succession, India kept fighting. Hardik Pandya (45 off 45 balls) and Ravindra Jadeja (16) played sensibly. Their 41-run stand pushed India to a respectable 249/9 in 50 overs. On the other hand, Matt Henry led New Zealand’s bowling attack, taking 5/42 in eight overs.

Chakravarthy Dismantles New Zealand’s Chase

New Zealand began their chase confidently. However, India’s bowlers kept the pressure on by taking wickets at regular intervals. Although Kane Williamson held one end with a well-paced 81 off 120 balls, his teammates struggled. As a result, the required run rate kept rising.

At the right moment, Varun Chakravarthy struck, breaking New Zealand’s middle order. Additionally, Kuldeep Yadav picked up 2/56, while Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya, and Ravindra Jadeja claimed one wicket each. Eventually, New Zealand crumbled under pressure. India’s disciplined bowling sealed a dominant victory.

Champions Trophy 2025 Semi-Final Schedule

Semi-Final 2: South Africa vs New Zealand – March 5 at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. Both matches will start at 2:30 PM IST. Looking ahead, the tournament now moves to its decisive stage.
