Opposition lawmakers disrupted the Serbian parliament on Tuesday. They threw smoke grenades and tear gas inside the chamber, causing panic and confusion.
Political Tensions Reach a Breaking Point
For months, Serbia has faced anti-corruption protests. Now, tensions have escalated further. As the spring session began, opposition members took drastic action to show their discontent.
Lawmakers Clash with Security
As soon as the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) approved the session agenda, opposition politicians rushed toward the speaker’s podium. Security guards immediately intervened, but scuffles quickly broke out. Meanwhile, some lawmakers set off smoke grenades and used pepper spray, while others hurled eggs and water bottles.

Injuries and a Medical Emergency
Shortly after, thick black and pink smoke filled the chamber, forcing several lawmakers to flee. Speaker Ana Brnabic later confirmed that two legislators were injured. Moreover, Jasmina Obradovic, an SNS member, suffered a stroke and is now in critical condition.
Serbia Faces Growing Unrest
Serbian parliament has seen violent clashes before. However, this incident further exposes the country’s deepening political crisis. Since adopting multi-party democracy in 1990, Serbia has experienced several disruptions, but this latest episode highlights rising instability in the government.
