TATA WPL 2025: Mumbai Indians Hold Nerve in Final Over to Overcome Gujarat Giants
Mumbai Indians secured a thrilling 9-run victory over Gujarat Giants, with Harmanpreet Kaur’s 54 and Hayley Matthews’ last-over heroics sealing the win.
Mumbai Indians enjoyed a thrilling homecoming with a narrow 9-run win over Gujarat Giants in Match 19 of the TATA Women’s Premier League 2025 at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai. As a result, they moved to second place in the points table. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur led with a crucial 54, while disciplined bowling ensured MI’s first successful defense of the season.

MI Sets a Strong Total

Mumbai Indians, batting first, posted 179/6. Right from the start, Harmanpreet Kaur’s composed 54 off 33 balls anchored the innings. Meanwhile, Hayley Matthews (27 off 15) and Nat Sciver-Brunt (38 off 31) added valuable runs. In the final overs, Amanjot Kaur’s late cameo (27 off 15) pushed MI past 170. At first, Gujarat Giants started well with sharp fielding and tight bowling. Captain Ashleigh Gardner made an early impact with a direct-hit run-out of Amelia Kerr. Soon after, Priya Mishra dismissed Matthews, leaving MI at 46/2. However, Harmanpreet and Sciver-Brunt steadied the innings with a 59-run partnership. Eventually, Gardner removed Sciver-Brunt, but Harmanpreet accelerated the scoring before falling in the final over to Tanuja Kanwer.

Gujarat’s Chase and MI’s Bowling Dominance

Gujarat Giants lost skipper Beth Mooney early in the fourth over. Soon after, Sanskriti Gupta took a brilliant forward-diving catch off Hayley Matthews’ bowling. Although Kashvee Gautam and Harleen Deol counterattacked, they couldn’t maintain momentum. As the powerplay ended, P. Sisodia stumped Kashvee, leaving Gujarat at 40/2. In response, Harmanpreet brought back Shabnim Ismail, who immediately dismissed Gardner, caught by Matthews. Then, Amelia Kerr trapped Harleen Deol (24 off 17), dealing Gujarat another blow. Despite losing wickets, Phoebe Litchfield and Deandra Dottin tried to rebuild. However, Ismail bowled Litchfield (22 off 16), and Kerr dismissed Dottin (10 off 11). With Gujarat struggling, Bharti Fulmali launched a late assault, smashing 61 off 25 balls. Moreover, Simran Shaikh and Tanuja Kanwer kept Gujarat in the hunt, leaving them needing 13 off the final over.

Last-Over Drama

As the final over approached, Harmanpreet handed the ball to Hayley Matthews, who stayed calm under pressure. Although a dropped catch gave Gujarat hope, a mix-up led to Tanuja’s run-out. Finally, Matthews bowled Shaikh, sealing MI’s thrilling victory. In the end, this win reaffirmed MI’s title credentials. Their strong performance in both batting and bowling highlighted their balanced squad.
