The White House confirmed on Wednesday that President Donald Trump successfully fulfilled his promise to rescue two stranded astronauts. After spending an unexpected nine months in space, the crew safely landed in the Gulf of America. The administration expressed gratitude to NASA, SpaceX, and Elon Musk for their crucial role in the mission.
A Mission That Lasted Far Longer Than Expected
NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore originally planned for a much shorter mission. However, instead of returning as scheduled, they remained in space for 286 days—278 days longer than planned. During this time, they orbited Earth 4,576 times and covered an astonishing 121 million miles (195 million kilometers) before finally making their way home.

Trump’s Directive to Elon Musk and SpaceX
On January 28, 2025, Trump took action to ensure the astronauts’ safe return. He announced on Truth Social that he had instructed Elon Musk and SpaceX to bring them back.
He wrote:
“I have just asked Elon Musk and @SpaceX to ‘go get’ the 2 brave astronauts who have been virtually abandoned in space by the Biden Administration. They have been waiting for many months on @Space Station. Elon will soon be on his way. Hopefully, all will be safe. Good luck Elon!!!”
Williams and Wilmore had been aboard the International Space Station (ISS) since June 2024. Although NASA had already scheduled a SpaceX return mission for late March 2025, Trump emphasized the urgency of bringing them home as soon as possible.
A Successful Return to Earth
On Tuesday at 5:57 PM ET (Wednesday 3:27 AM IST), the astronauts finally returned. Along with their fellow crew members—American astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov—they successfully splashed down off the coast of Florida.
Meanwhile, SpaceX’s Crew-10 had already arrived at the ISS, ensuring a smooth transition before Williams and Wilmore departed.
As soon as the returning crew landed, SpaceX Mission Control in California greeted them warmly:
“On behalf of SpaceX, welcome home.”
Excited about the journey, NASA astronaut Nick Hague, who commanded the capsule, responded:
“What a ride.”
Health Checks Before Reuniting with Family
After their extended stay in space, Williams and Wilmore will undergo routine health evaluations at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. NASA flight surgeons will monitor their physical condition for a few days before granting clearance for them to reunite with their families.
