Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) in the second match of Sunday's double-header in IPL 2025 by four wickets with five balls to spare. The match took place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Mumbai Indians' Struggles in the Powerplay
CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and chose to bowl first. Rohit Sharma had a poor start to the tournament, losing his wicket to Khaleel Ahmed. Suryakumar and Tilak built a steady partnership, finding boundaries regularly. After 10 overs, MI stood at 82/3. SKY batted on 29 off 25 balls with two fours and a six, while Tilak Varma scored 27 off 18 balls with two fours and two sixes.
MS Dhoni’s Brilliant Stumping Turns the Game
In the 11th over, MS Dhoni stunned everyone with a brilliant stumping off Noor Ahmad's delivery, dismissing Suryakumar Yadav. With this, MI slipped to 87/4 in 10.3 overs. Mumbai needed a quick-fire partnership to set a competitive total.
Middle-Order Collapse
Noor Ahmad struck again in the 13th over, removing Robin Minz. Naman Dhir walked in at No. 7, but on the last ball of the over, Tilak Varma got trapped LBW. MI collapsed to 96/6 after 13 overs. Mitchell Santner came in at No. 8. By the end of the 14th over, MI finally crossed the 100-run mark.
MI’s Lower-Order Struggle
In the 17th over, Noor Ahmad bowled out Namandeep, taking his fourth wicket. MI slumped to 118/7. In the next over, Khaleel Ahmed dismissed Mitchell Santner for 11 off 13 balls, leaving MI at 128/8.
Khaleel struck again on the last ball of the 19th over, making it 141/9. However, Deepak Chahar provided a late flourish. His explosive 28 off 15 balls, with two fours and two sixes, helped MI reach 155/9 at the end of 20 overs.
CSK’s Chase Begins
Rachin Ravindra and Rahul Tripathi opened for CSK. Deepak Chahar struck early, dismissing Tripathi for 2(3). At No. 3, Ruturaj Gaikwad took charge. After two overs, CSK reached 12/1. Gaikwad attacked Trent Boult with back-to-back boundaries. By the end of the powerplay, CSK was in control at 62/1, with Gaikwad on 42*(19) and Ravindra on 16*(14). Gaikwad had already smashed six fours and two sixes.
Gaikwad’s Half-Century and MI’s Fightback
Gaikwad reached his fifty in just 22 balls in the seventh over. However, in the eighth over, Vignesh Puthur dismissed him for 53 off 26 balls, reducing CSK to 78/2. Shivam Dube then joined Ravindra, with CSK needing 78 more runs to win.
Vignesh struck again in the 10th over, removing Dube. By the halfway mark, CSK stood at 96/3, still in a strong position.
Deepak Hooda came in at No. 5 to join Rachin Ravindra. CSK reached 100 runs by the end of the 11th over. In the 12th over, Vignesh dismissed Hooda for 3(5). Sam Curran then joined Ravindra at the crease. After 12 overs, CSK stood at 108/4.
Wickets Keep Falling
In the first ball of the 15th over, Will Jacks took the wicket of Sam Curran. With five wickets down, CSK was at 116/5. Ravindra Jadeja then came in at No. 7. With steady runs coming easily, CSK inched closer to the target. After 16 overs, CSK reached 125/5.
By the end of the 17th over, Rachin Ravindra was batting on 46*(41), while Jadeja stood at 13*(11). CSK needed just a few more runs, with the scoreboard reading 135/5.
Rachin’s Half-Century and CSK’s Victory
In the 18th over, Rachin Ravindra completed his half-century, smashing a six off Vignesh Puthur. However, more drama unfolded as Ravindra Jadeja got run out. CSK’s score moved to 152/6, bringing MS Dhoni to the crease at No. 8.
Finally, Rachin Ravindra sealed the match with a six. CSK won by four wickets.
