Spin vs Power: LSG and MI Set for a Tactical Showdown in IPL 2025
LSG and MI clash in a high-stakes IPL 2025 battle, with LSG aiming to continue their dominance and MI seeking redemption.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) will face Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 16th match of IPL 2025 at Ekana Stadium, Lucknow. Since joining the league in 2022, LSG has dominated this rivalry, winning five out of six matches against MI. However, they enter this game with several challenges.

LSG’s Batting Struggles and Injury Concerns

So far, Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh have delivered strong performances with the bat. However, other key players are struggling. Rishabh Pant has managed only 17 runs in three innings, while Ayush Badoni, whom LSG retained, has scored just 51 runs. Moreover, Aiden Markram has not yet found his rhythm, which has added to LSG’s batting woes.

At the same time, injuries have severely impacted their squad. Avesh Khan, Mohsin Khan, Mayank Yadav, and Akash Deep have all been unavailable due to fitness issues. Fortunately, Akash Deep has now recovered and is ready to play.

MI’s Slow Start but Strong Bowling

Initially, MI struggled, losing their first two matches. However, they made a strong comeback with a dominant win over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Even though Jasprit Bumrah is missing, MI’s bowling attack has been outstanding. They rank second in terms of wickets taken, bowling average, and economy rate.

Meanwhile, their batting lineup has shown signs of improvement. Suryakumar Yadav has regained his form, and Ryan Rickelton smashed a quick half-century against KKR. On the other hand, Rohit Sharma’s poor form remains a concern, as he has scored only 21 runs in three innings.

MI’s Young Talents and Spin Strength

Over the years, MI has developed several young Indian players. For instance, both Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav refined their T20 skills with MI. This season, the team has introduced Vignesh Puthur, a left-arm wrist-spinner, and Ashwani Kumar, a left-arm pacer. Notably, Puthur has taken four wickets in two matches, while Ashwani grabbed four in one game.

On the other hand, Ravi Bishnoi remains LSG’s best bowler since 2022. The franchise retained him for INR 11 crore. However, he has struggled this season. So far, he has taken only three wickets in 11 overs and has been expensive, conceding 12.54 runs per over. As a result, LSG desperately needs him to regain his form.

At the same time, MI’s spin attack appears to be a major strength. They have Mitchell Santner (left-arm orthodox), Vignesh Puthur (left-arm wrist-spin), Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and Will Jacks (both off-spinners). Additionally, MI’s spinners have the second-best economy rate (8.12) and third-best average (27.28) this season. If the pitch favors spin, MI’s bowlers could pose a serious challenge to LSG’s batters.

Pitch and Weather Conditions

For this match, LSG will play on a black-soil pitch. In their last home game, they used a red-soil surface, which their mentor Zaheer Khan openly criticized. As a result, they have switched to the black-soil pitch, which is expected to favor spinners. However, this move could backfire, as MI also has a strong spin attack.

Meanwhile, the weather conditions will be challenging. During the day, temperatures could reach 38°C. However, by the 7:30 PM start time, it should cool down significantly. Fortunately, there is no chance of rain.

Team Updates and Possible Lineups

In terms of team selection, LSG has received a boost. Akash Deep is now fit and could replace Avesh Khan, who has struggled, conceding 75 runs in seven overs while taking just one wicket.
