France Warns Meloni’s US Trip Could Undermine EU Trade Unity
French leaders warned that Giorgia Meloni’s upcoming visit to Donald Trump could weaken Europe’s united front against US tariffs.

French Industry Minister Marc Ferracci warned that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s planned meeting with US President Donald Trump could weaken Europe’s united stance against US tariffs. He told the agencies, “We need to be united because Europe is strong if it’s united.” He further added, “If we start having bilateral talks, of course it’ll break this momentum (on European unity).”

Meloni Seeks to Bridge Europe and Trump

Meloni, a right-wing leader, will meet Trump at the White House on April 17. She hopes to act as a bridge between the European Union and the Trump administration. However, Ferracci believes her visit might help Trump’s plan to divide Europe. Trump recently imposed 20% tariffs on EU goods, which could spark a trade war.

EU Considers Its Own Tariffs

Meanwhile, the European Commission is looking at the option of imposing up to 25% tariffs on a wide range of US exports. This move would be a direct response to Trump’s aggressive trade measures.

Calls for Unity Within the EU

In a separate interview, Europe Minister Benjamin Haddad also highlighted the importance of a unified response. He said, “If you go to the United States scattered and divided, do you think you’re stronger than if you go all 27, with 450 million people?” He added, “We’ll see what (Meloni) has to say.” According to him, although talks are possible, it is crucial to stay united. “It’s in our collective interest to have a united and firm response rather than divisions,” he noted.

Push for Stronger Trade Tools

Furthermore, Haddad urged the European Commission to use the Anti-Coercion Instrument (ACI). This mechanism would allow the EU to target American sectors such as technology and banking. “These tools were developed for this type of situation,” Haddad said. He continued, “Let’s put them on the table … We’ll see what the Commission’s proposals are.”

Meloni Caught Between US and EU Ties

On the other hand, Meloni’s office confirmed she would meet Trump on April 17 to discuss the new tariffs on EU imports. Trump’s latest measures include 25% import duties on steel, aluminium, and cars. Additionally, starting Wednesday, most other EU goods will face 20% tariffs. Trump argues that these moves target countries with high trade barriers against US products.

Meloni Faces Pressure at Home

Lastly, Reuters reported that Meloni, a strong supporter of Trump, is under pressure. She must balance her personal views with Italy’s deep economic ties to the EU. Italy’s economy relies heavily on exports, especially to the United States. Last year, Italy posted a €40 billion ($43.75 billion) trade surplus with the US, the third largest in the EU after Germany and Ireland. US trade accounts for 10% of Italy’s total exports.
