Olivia Munn has revealed she almost walked away from acting. However, her role in Apple TV+'s Your Friends and Neighbors gave her a new sense of purpose and pulled her back into the spotlight.
A Difficult Time Behind the Scenes
Before accepting the part, Munn was struggling. The COVID-19 pandemic had disrupted her life. At the same time, she became a new mother and battled postpartum anxiety. These experiences took a toll on her emotional and professional well-being.
She felt disconnected from acting and found no creative satisfaction. “I called my agents and my manager and said, 'I'm done being in front of the camera, don't put me up for anything,’” Munn admitted.
A New Role Changed Her Mind
Everything shifted when she received an offer to play Samantha in Your Friends and Neighbors. The dark comedy-drama, created by Jonathan Tropper, follows the lives of privileged elites navigating personal failures.
The show stars Jon Hamm as Andrew “Coop” Cooper, a disgraced hedge fund manager trying to rebuild his life after divorce and a major financial scandal. Munn plays a divorced mother who becomes romantically involved with Coop. She tries to survive in a high-society world built on appearances and power.
Munn described the ultra-wealthy characters as detached from reality. “There's a carelessness with which they live their life. They feel impervious to the world and it's so fascinating to watch these people crumble,” she said.
Samantha: A Fighter and a Mother
Munn called her character a true survivor. “Samantha is a survivor, she's going to do anything to maintain her place and take care of her children,” she stated. Her performance stood out so strongly that it changed the show's direction.
Originally, her character was meant for a single-season arc. However, Tropper and the producers were so impressed by her work, they decided to bring her back. “After working with her for a little while, I think we had consensus across the board, we wanted her to stay,” Tropper revealed.
Health Battles Behind the Camera
Munn’s acting comeback came during a personal health crisis. Just months before filming, doctors diagnosed her with breast cancer. She went through several surgeries and treatments. Despite the challenge, she remained strong and is now in remission.
Her ability to return to work so soon after such a difficult period speaks to her resilience. Munn is now confirmed to appear in the show’s second season.
With Your Friends and Neighbors earning strong reviews and a second season already underway, Munn has found a fresh chapter in her career. Her decision to return to acting not only brought personal healing but also reminded fans of her powerful on-screen presence.
