Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, a highly experienced test pilot from the Indian Air Force (IAF), is set to make history as the first Indian to visit the International Space Station (ISS). This achievement is part of Axiom Space’s Ax-4 mission, which is scheduled for next month. The mission will also mark India’s first human spaceflight in 41 years, following Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma’s 1984 mission.

Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, confirmed the news, calling it a significant milestone for India’s space exploration efforts.

Shukla’s Current Training in Houston

Currently, Group Captain Shukla is undergoing intense training in Houston, USA, in preparation for his space mission. Due to protocol, he is unable to speak to the media. However, his family has expressed immense pride and excitement about his historic journey.

His sister, Suchi Shukla, a science teacher, shared her excitement and pride, saying, “He is super-excited about it. We’re a little scared, but we are very happy and proud of him. I am getting goosebumps and shivers as we speak. It’s a moment of pride for all of us, as ‘humre India se koi jaa raha hai’ and the world is talking about it. It’s a very big achievement.”

She also shared an inspiring line from Shukla, who often says, “Dream big. If you dream big, then somewhere along the way, you will find a way to reach your goal. Once you reach that point, people will start recognizing you, loving you, and giving their best wishes – everything aligns. It all starts with dreaming big.” Suchi proudly added, “Who knew a boy from Lucknow would make it, and he did.”

Key Role in India’s Space Program

Group Captain Shukla is not only part of the Axiom mission but also a leading candidate for India’s Gaganyaan mission, which will be the country’s first crewed orbital flight. Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially confirmed Shukla’s participation in the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)’s Human Spaceflight Program at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram last February. This makes his involvement a significant step in India's space exploration program.

The Journey Towards Space: Inspiration and Commitment

In a previous interview, Shukla reflected on his journey. He revealed, “The mission was announced in 2018. It was my desire to explore more in life that made me apply. Around 70 pilots had applied, and the selection took almost a year.” Shukla’s desire for growth and exploration has driven him to achieve this remarkable milestone.

His sister shared how the Kargil War of 1999 shaped his career choices. “Becoming a pilot wasn’t on his mind initially. But the Kargil War made an impact on him,” Suchi explained. Shukla graduated from City Montessori School in Aliganj, Lucknow, in 2001, and soon after, he joined the National Defence Academy (NDA). He was commissioned into the Indian Air Force in 2006.

The Unexpected Path to the IAF

Suchi recalled the unplanned journey that led to Shukla’s selection for the IAF. “His friend got an NDA form but decided not to go. So, Shubhanshu randomly filled it out. After passing the exam, he took permission and went for it,” she explained. This spontaneous decision ultimately set him on the path to becoming a distinguished test pilot and astronaut.

Family Life and Background

Shukla married Dr. Kamna Shubha Shukla, a dentist, in 2009. Together, they have a five-year-old son. The family resides in Triveni Nagar, Lucknow. Shukla’s father, Shambhu Dayal Shukla, has retired from the government service, and his mother, Asha Shukla, is a housewife. Their support has been vital in his success and achievements.

Extensive Flight Experience and Career Achievements

Since being commissioned into the Indian Air Force in 2006, Shukla has gained significant experience in aviation. As a combat leader and test pilot, he has logged over 2,000 flight hours. He has piloted a wide variety of aircraft, including the Su-30 MKI, MiG-21, MiG-29, Jaguar, Hawk, Dornier, and An-32. His extensive experience has made him one of the most qualified pilots for India’s space missions.
