Hollywood actor Liev Schreiber recently spoke about his 17-year-old transgender daughter Kai. In an interview with Variety, he shared that Kai never officially came out to him or her mother, actress Naomi Watts.
Instead, the most significant moment for him came when Kai asked them to use different pronouns. “Kai was always who Kai is,” he said. “But I suppose the most profound moment was her asking us to change her pronouns.”
He added, “To be honest with you, it didn't feel like that big of a deal to me only because Kai had been so feminine for so long.”
He Praises Her Courage
Liev went on to praise Kai's strength, calling her “such a fighter.” He emphasized the importance of being seen. “It’s important that she goes, ‘Hey, I am trans,’ and, ‘Look at me,’” he said.
He Stresses Community Support
Before attending an LGBTQ youth event in New York, Liev highlighted the importance of standing with vulnerable communities. He said many young LGBTQ individuals do not have family support or access to help. Therefore, they need extra care and visibility.
When It Comes to Parenting, He Stays Grounded
Although he is a parent of a transgender teen, Liev avoided giving broad advice. In his words, it “feels like an overstep.”
He noted that parenting teens is challenging no matter what. “Teenagers are a headache. They’re hard. It doesn't matter whether they're trans or not,” he said. “But a trans teen is going to be a teen.”
Background on His Family
Liev and Naomi have two children. Their son Sasha was born in 2007, followed by Kai in 2008. The actors met at the Met Gala 2025. However, they separated in 2016 after going through relationship challenges.
Kai Made Headlines in Fashion
Earlier in March 2025, Kai reached a major milestone. She walked the runway for Valentino at Paris Fashion Week. After the event, she proudly shared photos on her Instagram account.
