England thrashed West Indies by 238 runs in the first ODI at Edgbaston on Thursday. As a result, they took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. This victory also ended their seven-match losing streak in ODIs.
Brook Starts Strong as Captain
Harry Brook led England for the first time as their permanent white-ball captain. He began his captaincy with a big win. England batted first and scored a massive 400 for 8. This was their second-largest win in terms of runs in ODI history.
Batters Set Up Huge Total
Jacob Bethell, who returned from the IPL, top-scored with 82. He played on his home ground at Warwickshire. Earlier, Ben Duckett added 60 runs. Soon after, Brook contributed 58. Joe Root also scored 57.
However, West Indies bowlers failed to contain the run flow. Although Jayden Seales picked up four wickets, he conceded 84 runs in just nine overs.
West Indies Collapse Under Pressure
Chasing 401, West Indies needed a record effort. So far, only South Africa has chased a 400+ target in ODI history. That happened in 2006 against Australia.
Nevertheless, West Indies collapsed. They were bowled out for just 162. The team lost all wickets with more than 23 overs remaining. Shockingly, Jayden Seales, who remained unbeaten on 29, was their top scorer. Moreover, only two others crossed the 20-run mark.
England Bowlers Dominate
England's bowlers delivered a superb performance. Jamie Overton took 3 wickets for 22 runs. Likewise, Saqib Mahmood picked 3 for 32. Both pacers tore through the West Indies lineup.
Brief Scorecard
Now, the teams will travel to Cardiff for the second ODI on Sunday. Then, the final match will be played at The Oval on Tuesday. Stay tuned with JUSZNEWS for regular updates!
