Google Launches Voluntary Exit Program to Cut Costs, Focus on AI
Google is offering voluntary buyouts to US employees as it cuts costs and shifts focus to artificial intelligence.

Google has offered voluntary buyouts to thousands of its employees in the US. The move is part of the company's ongoing cost-cutting strategy. At the same time, Google is making major investments in artificial intelligence.

Teams affected by the offer

The buyouts have been offered to employees from the search and core engineering teams. According to a memo seen by The Verge, Nick Fox, who heads the Knowledge and Information group, said the program gives "a supportive exit path for those of you who don’t feel aligned with our strategy, don’t feel energized by your work, or are having difficulty meeting the expectations of your role."

Voluntary exits replace large layoffs

Since the backlash from the January 2023 layoffs, Google has been choosing voluntary exits over forced job cuts. Back then, it cut 12,000 jobs. Now, various departments such as the Pixel and Android teams have also introduced similar programs throughout 2024 and 2025.

Top performers urged to stay

Nick Fox also encouraged high-performing employees to continue. He wrote, "If you’re excited about your work, energised by the opportunity ahead, and performing well, I really (really!) hope you don’t take this! We have ambitious plans and tons to get done."

Leaders back the new approach

Jen Fitzpatrick, Google’s Senior Vice President of Core Systems, supported the initiative. She noted in a memo seen by Business Insider that there was “positive feedback across the company” for similar programs. She added that the offer “may be a fit for Core Googlers who aren’t feeling excited about and aligned with Core’s mission and goals.”

AI and efficiency drive the change

In October, CFO Anat Ashkenazi said Google would focus on reducing operational costs while investing in AI. These voluntary exit programs show the company’s attempt to balance expenses and talent retention.

Workforce size remains large

As of December 31, 2024, Google’s parent company Alphabet had 183,323 employees. While the total number of exits isn’t known yet, the company hopes this approach will create a more focused and motivated workforce.
