After years of disappointment, South Africa finally won a major title. This time, they chased 282 runs against Australia at Lord’s. Aiden Markram and captain Temba Bavuma led the successful chase. As a result, they became national heroes.
Earlier, South Africa had often reached the semifinals or finals. However, they always fell short of the trophy. Now, that painful streak is over. Their win not only beat a strong Australian team but also ended a long-standing mental burden.
Australia Tried to Pressure South Africa
Meanwhile, the Australians used mental games during the match. According to Bavuma, they kept using the word “choke” to unsettle the Proteas.
He said, “While we were batting we could hear the Aussies using that dreaded word: choke.”
Despite that, South Africa stayed focused. They believed in their team, even though many doubted them. Bavuma added, “We came in with a lot of belief and a lot of doubters. We got ourselves into the final, there were doubters as to the route we took. This win squashes that. Here’s an opportunity for us as a nation, divided as we are, to unite.
Victory Brings Healing from Past Defeats
Earlier this year, South Africa had lost the T20 World Cup final to India. They also suffered a heartbreaking loss to Australia in the 1999 World Cup semifinal. Notably, both defeats happened in England.
Therefore, this win felt like revenge. It also gave South Africans something to celebrate.
Bavuma expressed hope for the future: “As a country, it’s a chance for us to rejoice in something, to forget about our issues and really come together.”
He continued, “I hope it inspires and continues to inspire our country. For this group of players, there were a lot of doubters but the way we played would have wiped all of that out.”
Markram Reflects on Breaking the Tag
In addition, Markram shared how much this win meant for the team. He scored a century and was named the Player of the Match.
He said, “It’ll be great to not have to hear that again. To have got the job done and to get rid of that is quite a big thing for this team.”
Moreover, he added, “All the questions that have been asked in the past have now been answered.”
