Life can often be unfair. For Rute Cardoso, the wife of footballer Diogo Jota, it became heartbreakingly cruel. Just ten days after celebrating their wedding, Rute lost both her husband and the father of her three children.
The couple had married on June 22 in an emotional ceremony in Porto. But by July 3, Jota and his younger brother Andre Silva were gone.
The Crash That Ended Everything
In the early hours of Thursday, Jota and Andre were traveling in a Lamborghini through northwestern Spain. Police reports stated that the vehicle suffered a tyre burst while overtaking, causing it to lose control, veer off the road, and catch fire.
Both men died at the scene. Their bodies were taken to Zamora, where forensic experts began autopsies.
Hours Before, They Shared Their Joy
Just a few hours before the crash, Rute and Diogo had posted their wedding video on Instagram. The video featured unseen moments, heartfelt music, and joyful memories.
In the post, they reflected on their wedding day, calling it a memory they would always hold close. Their social media pages were filled with messages about love, togetherness, and their future.
A Bond That Began in School
Diogo and Rute had known each other since 2012. They met at the age of 13, attending the same high school in Porto. Over the years, their friendship turned into a lasting relationship.
Rute supported Jota through every phase of his football career. She moved with him across clubs and countries, building a home and a family. The couple had three children — two sons, Dinis and Duarte, and a daughter whose name has not been made public.
Their Dream Wedding in Porto
In July 2022, Diogo proposed to Rute by a lakeside. That proposal marked a new chapter in their lives. On June 22, 2025, they finally got married in their hometown, surrounded by loved ones.
Rute described the day as the happiest moment of her life. She posted a photo from the wedding, expressing her joy at saying yes to forever. Diogo responded online, calling himself lucky to have her.
A Career That Inspired Millions
Born in Porto, Jota began his professional football journey with Paços de Ferreira. He later played for Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he gained recognition in English football.
He joined Liverpool FC in 2020. Over the next four years, he scored 65 goals in 182 games, helping the club win the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup.
On the international stage, he represented Portugal 49 times and won the UEFA Nations League twice.
In an earlier interview, Jota once said that coming from a small town like Gondomar, playing at the top level felt like a dream he would always treasure.
The Football World Mourns
News of Jota’s death shocked fans and the global football community. Liverpool FC expressed deep sadness. The club said it was devastated by his passing and recognized his major contributions to the team.
Teammates, supporters, and fellow athletes shared tributes. They remembered his talent, hard work, and positive spirit.
Rute’s Heartbreak and Lasting Memories
Rute now faces a future she never imagined — raising their three children without her husband. Her recent social media posts captured the depth of her love and joy just days ago. Now, they also reflect the pain of a dream cut short.
