India may be stepping into a new era in athletics — not just on the field, but beyond it too. Leading the way is Neeraj Chopra, who joined hands with the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), JSW Sports, and World Athletics to host the country’s first-ever Continental Tour Gold meet — the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025.
By allowing the event to carry his name, the two-time Olympic medallist showed he understands his influence and how it can help grow athletics in India.
A Night to Remember for Indian Athletics
But ideas only matter if they work. And this one certainly did. Anyone who was at the Sri Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday, especially in the buzzing West Block Stand, witnessed something special. Despite limited promotion beforehand, the organisers created an unforgettable atmosphere at the one-day event.
Neeraj, along with other global stars — including former Olympic champions and world record holders — gave India a rare, thrilling night of top-class athletics.
Chopra Wins in Style
Neeraj did not disappoint. He won the men’s javelin event with a massive throw of 86.18 meters. He fouled on his first attempt but bounced back with a second throw of 82.99m, taking the lead over Rumesh Pathirage, who had thrown 81.90m.
Rumesh wasn’t done. On his third throw, he recorded 84.34m and celebrated with passion, lifting his arms as the crowd in the North Block roared.
But Neeraj answered immediately — with a spectacular third attempt of 86.18m, even in chilly and windy conditions. That throw sealed his gold.
Neeraj’s ability to deliver under pressure has become his trademark. Remarkably, he hasn’t finished outside the top two in any major competition since 2021.
A Master of Consistency
Neeraj has earned the nickname “Mr Consistent”, and for good reason. His mental strength, sharp technique, and work ethic continue to amaze fans and experts alike.
Julius Yego from Kenya, often called “Mr YouTube”, was the only athlete to challenge Neeraj slightly with a throw of 84.51m. Neeraj responded with 84.07m in the fifth round — but by then, he had already secured his win.
Indian Fans Show Up in Huge Numbers
The bigger question was how Indian fans would respond to such a high-profile athletics event. India isn’t usually known for big crowds at track and field competitions.
But those doubts disappeared quickly. An impressive 14,593 fans filled the stadium. Many arrived two hours early, enjoying performances by Haryanvi rapper Dhanda Nyoliwala and The Vixens Crew, who kept the energy high.
Neeraj Proud of Success On and Off the Field
At the post-event press conference, Neeraj said, “I am happy that the event has finished successfully,” clearly proud of both his performance and the overall success of the meet.
A Moment for Indian Sport
The event was more than just a javelin competition. It was a moment for Indian sport. It showed what’s possible when star athletes take the lead and fans show up.
Chief Minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah, posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Witnessed a historic moment at the “Neeraj Chopra Classic – 2025” at Bengaluru’s Kanteerava Stadium today, alongside Hon’ble Governor Shri Thawarchand Gehlot.”
