India finally ended their long wait for a Test win at Edgbaston with a massive 336-run victory over England on Sunday. This result not only leveled the five-match series 1-1, but also became India’s biggest overseas Test win by runs.
Akash Deep’s dream spell
England had to chase a record 608 runs in the fourth innings. However, they only managed 271 before getting bowled out shortly before Tea on Day 5.
Akash Deep was the star of the match. The fast bowler took 6 wickets for 99 runs in the second innings and 4 in the first, completing a 10-wicket haul in the match. He broke England’s top order and came back to remove the dangerous Jamie Smith, who was batting on 88. Interestingly, Shubman Gill caught that final wicket, ending the match he had dominated as a captain and batter.
Historic moment for India
India had never won a Test at Edgbaston before. They had played there eight times, losing seven. In fact, in 2022, England had chased down a record 378 at the same venue to beat India. But this time, Ben Stokes’ team had no answers.
Gill’s magical batting display
Shubman Gill delivered one of the finest captain’s performances in England. He scored 269 runs in the first innings and followed it with a blazing 161 off 162 balls in the second. His total of 430 runs is now among the highest match scores by a visiting captain in England.
He also led the team well, especially on Day 5. After a rain break, he rotated Siraj, Akash Deep, and the spinners smartly to maintain pressure.
Praise from legends
Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar praised India’s effort on X. He wrote, "A Shublime innings from the man of the moment! Congratulations, @ShubmanGill, on powering India to a brilliant Test victory! @RishabhPant17, @klrahul, and @imjadeja batted very well, especially in the 2nd innings."
He added, "India’s approach was to take England out of this game and force them to play differently, making sure that there would only be 1 winner... Needless to say, Akash Deep was the standout bowler, and in my opinion, he bowled the ball of the series to Joe Root."

What’s next for India?
India will now travel to Lord’s for the third Test, carrying confidence and momentum. Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah is expected to return, but the outstanding efforts of Gill and Akash Deep have proved that India’s bench strength remains strong and reliable.
