Pilot Found Dead in Wreckage
According to India Today, rescue teams found the pilot’s body in the wreckage. The crash occurred in an area under the jurisdiction of the Rajaldesar police station. The cause of the crash is still unknown.
Locals and Police Rush to the Scene
Soon after the crash, many villagers gathered at the spot. Several videos taken by bystanders showed the burning debris of the aircraft scattered across the area. Senior police officers also reached the site after receiving the alert.
About the Jaguar Aircraft
The Jaguar is a British-French supersonic ground-attack aircraft. It features a swept-wing design and twin engines. Though originally designed for single-seat missions, the version used in this crash had two seats.
India first received Jaguars in 1979 when the Royal Air Force loaned 18 of them to the IAF. The first two were deployed by the Western Air Command. In 1981, India began receiving the second batch—40 Jaguar International jets—built at Warton.
Inquiry Expected
While the Air Force has not released an official statement yet, a probe is likely to be launched to determine the cause of the crash. This incident adds to growing concerns over the safety and age of India's older fighter jets.
