India Reacts to Trump’s Tariff Announcement, Says It’s Reviewing the Move
India said it is reviewing US President Donald Trump's 25% tariff announcement on Indian imports and remains committed to fair and balanced trade talks.

India has responded to US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 25% tariff on Indian imports. The government said it has taken note of the statement and is examining its possible impact.

In an official statement, the Indian government said, “The Government has taken note of a statement by the US President on bilateral trade. The Government is studying its implications." It also said India remains committed to building strong trade ties with the United States through fair and balanced negotiations.

Trump Accuses India of Unfair Trade Practices

President Trump, in a post on his platform Truth Social, criticized India’s trade policies. He claimed that India imposes very high tariffs and uses what he called “strenuous and obnoxious" non-monetary trade barriers. He also pointed to India’s ongoing energy and defense deals with Russia during the war in Ukraine.

Trump wrote that Indian imports will face a 25% tariff starting August 1. He also said a penalty would be added, although he didn’t explain what form that would take. According to Trump, “All things not good," referring to India’s continued military and energy purchases from Russia despite global pressure on Moscow.

He argued that such trade barriers and Russia ties have blocked stronger US-India trade. He called the new tariff and penalty a direct response to these concerns.

India Stands by Its Trade Priorities

India did not respond directly to Trump’s criticism. However, the government defended its right to protect sectors that are vulnerable to global disruptions. It said domestic interests would continue to guide its trade decisions.

“The Government attaches the utmost importance to protecting and promoting the welfare of our farmers, entrepreneurs, and MSMEs. India will take all steps necessary to secure our national interest," the statement added.

Broader Trade Strategy

India also referred to its broader trade goals. It pointed to the recently completed Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) with the UK. The government said this agreement showed India’s effort to balance economic opportunity with strategic independence.
