Gurmuk Singh, a 30-year-old British Sikh man known as Gary, was stabbed to death last week in Ilford, East London. The Metropolitan Police confirmed his identity on Thursday. According to them, the people involved in the incident knew each other.
Police Arrest Main Suspect, Trial Set for 2026
Soon after the incident on July 23, police arrested 27-year-old Amardeep Singh. They charged him with murder and placed him in custody. His trial will begin on January 5, 2026, at the Old Bailey in London.
Police received a call from the London Ambulance Service about a fight at a home on Felbrigge Road. When officers arrived, they found Gary with stab wounds. Paramedics tried to save him, but he died at the scene. “Police were called by the London Ambulance Service to reports of an altercation at a residential address. Officers attended as Gary was treated for stab wounds. Despite the best efforts of the paramedics, he sadly died at the scene," the Met Police stated.
Police Make More Arrests, Investigation Continues
In addition to Amardeep, officers arrested four more people—a 29-year-old man and three women aged 29, 30, and 54. Police later released them on bail. However, they must return in October as part of the ongoing investigation.
Gary’s Family Shares Heartfelt Tribute
Gary’s family remembered him as someone full of joy and love. “Gary was a well-loved man who had a remarkable ability to connect with everyone he met. A true social butterfly, nothing brought him more joy than being surrounded by his family. Gary will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in our hearts forever.”
Post-Mortem Reveals Cause of Death
Doctors conducted a post-mortem and confirmed that a stab wound to the left thigh caused Gary’s death. Authorities have now opened an inquest, but they have put it on hold while the investigation continues.
Police Describe Attack as Isolated
Detective Chief Inspector Joanna Yorke, from the Met’s Specialist Crime North unit, said the stabbing appears to be an isolated case. “An incident of this nature sends shockwaves throughout the local area and we understand the direct impact on the community. People can expect to see an uptick in police presence while officers conduct initial investigations. Please do not hesitate to speak to them if you have any concerns at all.”
She also said the police would increase their presence in the area and encouraged residents to speak up if they had any concerns.
