Ajit Doval Visits Russia Amid Tensions Between India and US
Ajit Doval visits Russia to boost ties with Moscow amid rising US-India tensions over Russian oil and defence trade.

Ajit Doval, India’s National Security Adviser, has arrived in Russia to strengthen the growing partnership between New Delhi and Moscow. His visit has become more important now as tensions rise between India and the United States over India’s ongoing purchases of Russian oil and military gear.

Visit Grows Urgent After Trump's Criticism

Although Doval’s trip had been planned earlier, it has gained urgency after recent harsh comments from US President Donald Trump. According to The Times of India, Trump's strong criticism of India’s close ties with Russia added pressure to the timing and significance of this visit.

Key Meetings to Focus on Security and Energy

During his stay, Doval will reportedly hold closed-door meetings with top Russian defence and security officials. These talks aim to boost cooperation in key areas like regional security, fighting terrorism, and ensuring energy stability.

Trump's Threats Add to Strain

This visit comes just days after Trump threatened to sharply raise tariffs on Indian goods. On July 31, Trump announced a 25% tariff on Indian imports and warned that it would rise “very substantially” within 24 hours. He linked the move directly to India’s continued oil trade with Russia.

Trump also dismissed India’s trade policies, saying a “zero tariff” offer on US goods entering India wasn’t enough. He accused India of helping Russia’s war efforts, stating the country was “fuelling the war” in Ukraine.

India Maintains Its Stand

Despite US criticism, India has continued buying Russian oil, citing economic and energy needs. Doval’s Russia visit highlights New Delhi’s focus on maintaining a balanced foreign policy while strengthening its strategic relationship with Moscow.
