An explosion at the U.S. Clairton Coke Works plant near Pittsburgh killed one person on Monday. It also injured many others. Moreover, authorities said two people are still missing.
Blast and Emergency Response
The blast happened around 11 a.m. at the plant. U.S. Steel owns the facility, which is a subsidiary of Nippon Steel. Soon after, thick black smoke rose into the air as firefighters rushed to fight the flames.
Meanwhile, Allegheny County Police spokesperson Jim Madalinsky confirmed that several people suffered injuries. However, their conditions are still unknown. Paramedics quickly transported many victims to hospital burn units. So far, officials have not determined the cause of the blast.
Governor’s Appeal and Local Reactions
In response, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said his team is working closely with local officials.
“The scene is still active, and folks nearby should follow the direction of local authorities,” he posted on social media. He also urged prayers for the Clairton community.
Furthermore, Abigail Gardner from Allegheny County said the blast sent black smoke spiraling over the Monongahela Valley.
Likewise, construction worker Zachary Buday described the impact. “It felt like thunder,” he said. “Shook the scaffold, shook my chest, and shook the building, and then when we saw the dark smoke coming up from the steel mill… it’s like something bad happened.”
Large-Scale Medical Response
Additionally, Allegheny County emergency services spokesperson Kasey Reigner said dozens were injured. As a result, the county sent 15 ambulances, along with more from local agencies.
