Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has made Grok 4 available to all users at no cost. The move comes just days after OpenAI launched GPT-5. Initially, Grok 4 was exclusive to SuperGrok and X Premium subscribers. Now, anyone can access it “for a limited time.”
Generous Usage Limits Announced
In a post on X, xAI confirmed, “For a limited time, we are rolling out generous usage limits so you can explore Grok 4’s full potential.” The announcement means both Auto and Expert modes are free to use. In Auto mode, Grok decides when to use deeper reasoning, ensuring faster responses and lower resource use. In Expert mode, users can manually switch to high-level reasoning for more complex queries.
Premium Model Still Exclusive
While Grok 4 is free, xAI’s most advanced version, Grok 4 Heavy, remains locked for SuperGrok Heavy subscribers. This approach allows xAI to attract more users while still keeping premium features under a paid plan.
Grok Imagine Launch Adds Video Capabilities
Last week, xAI also launched Grok Imagine, an AI-powered video generation tool, free for users in the US. However, controversy erupted soon after. A BBC report stated that some users managed to create explicit videos, including inappropriate depictions of celebrities like Taylor Swift and Sydney Sweeney.
Musk Plans Ads in Grok Chatbot
Elon Musk also revealed plans to introduce ads directly inside Grok’s chatbot interface. This move is part of xAI’s broader monetisation strategy, aiming to generate revenue while keeping some tools free for a wider audience.
