Shubman Gill is set to make his return to T20 International cricket in the Asia Cup 2025. The 25-year-old batter has not played in India’s T20I side since July 2024 during the Sri Lanka tour. Over the past year, Gill has focused mainly on ODIs and Test cricket, missing T20I series against Bangladesh, South Africa, and England. However, his consistent performances across formats have earned him a place in the 15-member Asia Cup squad and the role of vice-captain.
Gill will serve as deputy to Suryakumar Yadav, who will captain India in a major international tournament for the first time.
Gavaskar Backs Gill’s Selection
Some cricket experts were surprised by Gill’s inclusion, but legendary opener Sunil Gavaskar dismissed any doubts. He said Gill’s recent performances made his selection unquestionable.
“There was no doubt in my mind that he would come into the team because not only had he scored over 750 runs against England, but also because his form in T20Is and IPL was also incredible. He may have not been in the squad for the T20 World Cup last year, but this time there was no doubt that he would make it to the team,” Gavaskar told Sports Tak.
Suryakumar Explains Gill’s Absence
Captain Suryakumar Yadav clarified that Gill’s absence from T20Is was due to scheduling and his focus on red-ball cricket rather than a dip in form.
“Last time when he played T20 post World Cup, when we went to Sri Lanka, he was vice-captain. That’s where we started a new cycle for T20 World Cup. After that, we got busy with Test cricket, and he didn’t get opportunities. We’re happy to have him,” Suryakumar said at the press conference after the squad announcement.
Strong Batting Line-up
With Gill back in the squad, India’s batting line-up looks strong, combining youth and experience. The squad also includes players like Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, and Kuldeep Yadav. Together, they offer a balanced mix of power-hitters, all-rounders, and specialists, making India a formidable contender in the tournament.
