Russian air defence forces shot down a Ukrainian drone on Sunday near the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant in western Russia. According to Interfax, the unmanned aerial vehicle was intercepted before it could reach critical structures. However, the blast from the drone still damaged an auxiliary transformer at the site.
The plant’s press service confirmed the incident through Telegram, stating, “A combat unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) belonging to the Armed Forces of Ukraine was shot down by air defence systems near the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant. Upon impact, the drone detonated, resulting in damage to an auxiliary transformer.”
Fire Breaks Out but No Threat to Safety
Shortly after the strike, Russia’s REN TV reported a fire at the plant. The fire broke out in a transformer unit outside the nuclear zone, according to the plant’s officials. Importantly, authorities stressed that there was no risk to public safety or to the nuclear facility itself.
Fires in transformer units are serious but less dangerous than incidents in nuclear reactors. Such equipment is key to managing electricity flow from power plants, and damage often leads to power disruptions rather than nuclear hazards.
Attacks Escalate Despite Peace Talks
This attack highlights rising hostilities. Both Russia and Ukraine have intensified aerial assaults in recent weeks. The timing is notable, as Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky both met US President Donald Trump last week to discuss possible peace measures.
Despite these talks, neither side has scaled back attacks. Analysts say drone warfare and precision strikes have become central to the conflict, now more than three years old.
Russia Launches Strikes on Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk Oblast
Meanwhile, Russia carried out retaliatory attacks on Ukraine. On Sunday, its KAB aerial bombs and drones struck the Synelnykove district in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. Local authorities reported that seven houses and a bus were damaged.
The strikes left one person dead and injured nine others. Additionally, the bombardment hit a gas pipeline and a power line, disrupting basic infrastructure in the region.
Missile Barrage Hits Western Ukraine
Furthermore, on August 21, Moscow launched a large wave of missiles and drones against western Ukrainian cities. At least one person died and 26 were injured in those attacks.
In Mukachevo, a massive fire broke out at a large electronics factory. The assault also caused damage in other cities, including Lviv, where local officials confirmed widespread destruction.
Additional Context
The Kursk Nuclear Power Plant is one of Russia’s major energy facilities. Although its reactors were not affected, attacks near nuclear plants raise concerns about potential risks to energy stability and civilian safety.
Ukraine, on the other hand, continues to face repeated bombardments on its power grid and industrial zones, deepening the humanitarian and economic strain.
