Rajnath Singh Unveils Plans for India’s Military Upgrade and Indigenous Drone Development
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced India’s plans for a major military upgrade, highlighting indigenous aero-engines, the Sudarshan Chakra air defence system, and the growing importance of drones in modern warfare.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday announced major steps to strengthen India’s armed forces, emphasizing that the country cannot rely on foreign supplies in today’s security environment. Speaking at a defence conclave, he said the government aims to provide complete aerial security to all critical installations in the country within the next decade under the proposed Sudarshan Chakra air defence system. He added, “The system will include both offensive and defensive components to address emerging security threats,” according to PTI.

Indigenous Aero-Engine Project

Singh inaugurated a private aero engine testing facility by Raphe mPhibr Pvt Ltd in Noida. He described the facility as a “strong reflection of aatmanirbhar Bharat.” The Defence Minister further revealed that India will soon develop a powerful indigenous aero-engine. “Preparations for the project are almost complete, and execution will begin shortly,” he said. He called the Sudarshan Chakra initiative “game-changing” for India’s future defence capabilities.

Drones Are Critical to Modern Warfare

Singh highlighted the growing importance of drones in modern warfare. “Generally, when we hear the word 'aircraft', images of Tejas, Rafale, and fighter jets come to mind. This is natural, as these are all combat aircraft,” he said. However, he stressed that drones have now become a “significant force” in military strategy and must be integrated into India’s war policy.

Citing the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Singh noted the decisive role of drones in ongoing battles. “If you closely observe the Russia-Ukraine conflict, you will notice that drones have been used extensively—earlier, now, and continuously,” PTI quoted him. He added that understanding drone significance and incorporating them into India’s war strategy has become essential.

Investing in Drone Technology Gives Strategic Edge

Singh traced the evolution of drones, explaining that they were initially used only for surveillance and reconnaissance. Later, some countries developed drones capable of combat, deploying them in border conflicts. “Countries that invested in drone technology gained a significant edge in combat, while others lagged behind,” he said.

India, which previously relied on imported drones, has now started designing, developing, and manufacturing them domestically. “From my six to six-and-a-half years of experience as defence minister, I can say that the reality of today’s defence sector rests on aircraft technology and drones,” Singh added. He also praised entrepreneurs contributing to India’s growing drone technology sector.
