US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the United States will host the 2026 Group of 20 (G20) summit at his Trump National Doral golf resort in Florida. He called the location “the best” for the high-profile event and promised that his family business would not profit from hosting the summit.
“It’s the best location, it’s beautiful, beautiful everything,” Trump said. “We will not make any money on it,” he added, emphasizing that his only goal was to make the event successful.
Trump Previously Faced Criticism
During his first term, Trump attempted to host a different international summit at Doral. However, he abandoned the plan after backlash from his own party over ethics concerns.
This time, Trump faces less political resistance, even though he frequently stays at or promotes properties bearing his name while in office. His sons currently manage the Trump Organization, but Trump has continued to mix politics and business.
Trump’s Business Ventures and Global Travel
Trump has actively promoted his $TRUMP meme coin and hosted the top 220 investors at a luxury dinner at his Virginia golf property in May.
He also made his first foreign trip to Saudi Arabia, while his sons toured the region to secure deals for the family’s cryptocurrency ventures. Additionally, Trump visited Scotland to open a new golf course earlier this year.
Why Doral Was Chosen
The G20 includes major global economies, along with the European Union and African Union. Trump highlighted that Doral is close to Miami International Airport and has ample space for international delegations.
He said each delegation would “have its own building” and stressed that December was an ideal time, given the busy hotel season in South Florida.
“I think everybody wants it there,” Trump said when asked about the choice of venue. The US last hosted a G20 summit in Pittsburgh in 2009, making this a significant event for the country.
Local Leaders Welcome Decision
Miami Mayor Frances Suarez, who attended the announcement at the Oval Office, praised the decision. “This puts us on the global map,” Suarez said, adding that the summit would bring a “tremendous boom for your economy.” He also noted Trump’s extensive experience in the hospitality industry.
Trump Defends Ethics of the Move
While critics see the decision as a potential conflict of interest, Trump strongly defended it. “We’re doing a deal where it’s not going to be money, there’s no money in it. I just want it to go well,” he explained. “I think it’ll be really a beautiful thing.”
Trump also described Doral as “one of the most successful properties in the country.”
Vice President to Represent US in 2025
Trump revealed he will not attend this year’s G20 summit in South Africa.Instead, Vice President JD Vance will represent the United States at the meeting.
