The shooting occurred Wednesday at Utah Valley University in Orem, about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City. Earlier, the FBI announced it had recovered a weapon believed to be used in the attack.
Weapon and Evidence Recovered
Robert Coles, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Salt Lake City office, said agents found a high-powered bolt-action rifle in a wooded area where the shooter fled.
“The rifle was recovered in a wooded area where the shooter had fled,” Coles said. Additionally, he noted that the FBI laboratory is analyzing the weapon.
Moreover, investigators collected footwear impressions, a palm print, and forearm imprints from the scene, which are also under examination for further leads.
Details of the Attack
Charlie Kirk, 31, a conservative commentator and ally of former President Donald Trump, was shot and killed in what Utah Governor Spencer Cox described as a “political assassination.”
Kirk, the co-founder and president of Turning Point USA, was speaking at an outdoor event called “Prove Me Wrong”, which drew approximately 3,000 attendees.
According to security footage, the shooter arrived on campus just minutes before the event, climbed stairwells, and reached a rooftop. From there, he fired a single fatal shot.
Kirk was rushed to a local hospital but was pronounced dead hours later.
Reactions and Political Impact
The killing sparked widespread outrage across the political spectrum. Both Democratic and Republican leaders condemned the attack, and several foreign governments expressed shock and concern.
Meanwhile, the FBI continues to investigate the case. Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward and assist in identifying the suspect, highlighting the urgency of public cooperation in the ongoing investigation.
