Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced a major natural gas discovery in the Andaman Sea. The find at the Sri Vijayapuram-2 well marks a significant step in India’s deepwater exploration. It is expected to strengthen India’s energy security and reduce dependence on imported fuel.
Discovery Details
The Sri Vijayapuram-2 well lies about 17 kilometers off the east coast of the Andaman Islands. It is located at a water depth of 295 meters, with a target drilling depth of 2,650 meters.
During initial production testing between 2,212 and 2,250 meters, engineers confirmed the presence of natural gas. Some intermittent flaring was also observed. Officials transported gas samples to Kakinada, where tests revealed 87% methane content. Minister Puri described the discovery as an “ocean of energy opportunities”, emphasizing its potential to enhance India’s energy infrastructure.

Very happy to report the occurrence of natural gas in Sri Vijayapuram 2 well at a distance of 9.20 NM (17 km) from the shoreline on the east coast of the Andaman Islands at a water depth of 295 meters and target depth… pic.twitter.com/4VDeGtt8bt
Strategic Importance for India
This discovery comes at a crucial time. India is actively seeking to diversify its energy sources and reduce reliance on imports, which currently meet nearly 85% of its energy needs.
Moreover, the find supports the government’s National Deep Water Exploration Mission, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Independence Day. Known as “Samudra Manthan”, the mission aims to explore offshore hydrocarbon reserves through multiple deepwater wells.
Global Collaboration and Future Prospects
Minister Puri highlighted that the discovery will promote collaboration with global deepwater experts, including Petrobras, BP India, Shell, and ExxonMobil.
He added, “The presence of natural gas in the Andaman Sea will help advance India’s exploration goals and represents a significant milestone in the nation’s journey through the Amrit Kaal.”
Next Steps and Commercial Viability
Although initial results look promising, authorities will assess the size and commercial potential of the gas pool in the coming months. Minister Puri noted that confirming hydrocarbons in the Andaman basin is a major step. He also pointed out that the discovery aligns with similar offshore finds from Myanmar in the north to Indonesia in the south.
Strategic and Economic Impact
The Sri Vijayapuram-2 well discovery strengthens India’s energy security and positions the Andaman Sea as a strategic asset. Continued exploration could uncover more resources, significantly impacting India’s energy future and economic growth.
