Israel Frees 2000 Palestinians in Landmark Gaza Ceasefire Deal
Israel freed 2,000 Palestinian prisoners under the Gaza ceasefire deal, setting off emotional celebrations after Hamas released Israeli hostages on Monday.

Israel released at least 2,000 Palestinian prisoners on Monday as part of the Gaza ceasefire agreement. The move came shortly after Hamas freed Israeli hostages, signaling a major step toward easing regional tensions. As buses carrying freed prisoners arrived, families rushed to welcome them, creating scenes filled with tears, relief, and celebration.

Majority held without formal charges

Out of those released, more than 1,700 Palestinians had been held without any formal charges. They were detained following the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, which sparked the war. Many had been kept under administrative detention — a system that allows imprisonment without trial.

As a result, these detainees spent months, and in some cases years, behind bars without facing legal proceedings. When they finally returned home, crowds gathered in the streets, waving flags and chanting in joy.

Others served long prison terms

In addition to them, around 250 prisoners had served long sentences for serious crimes, including murder. Their release was part of the broader peace plan designed to reduce hostilities and strengthen the fragile ceasefire.

Moreover, several of the freed prisoners alleged that they had suffered repeated physical abuse during their time in Israeli custody. Their statements shed light on the harsh conditions many endured in detention.

Families reunite after years of separation

Meanwhile, across Gaza and the West Bank, families celebrated as long-awaited reunions took place. Mothers hugged sons they had not seen in years, while children ran toward fathers stepping off buses for the first time in decades. Streets filled with cheering crowds, songs, and waving flags as Palestinians marked what many called a day of “freedom and hope.”

A hopeful step toward lasting peace

Overall, the large-scale prisoner release marked one of the key outcomes of the Gaza ceasefire deal. It followed intense international mediation and brought cautious optimism to a region weary of war.

However, despite the relief and celebrations, leaders on both sides now face the difficult task of maintaining the fragile truce. Still, Monday’s exchange has sparked hope that a lasting peace in Gaza — once thought impossible — might finally be within reach.
