Singapore Stun India 2-1 to End Asian Cup Qualification Hopes
India’s hopes of qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup 2027 ended after a 1-2 defeat to Singapore in Goa, despite a bright start and an early goal from Lallianzuala Chhangte.

The Indian men’s football team’s dream of qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup 2027 came to an end after a 1-2 defeat to Singapore on Tuesday at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa. Despite a strong start and an early goal, the Blue Tigers could not maintain their momentum as Singapore’s Song Uiyong scored twice to hand the visitors a crucial win.

Bright Start for India

Under head coach Khalid Jamil, India began the match with high energy and attacking intent. Playing on home soil, the Blue Tigers pressed Singapore deep in their own half, creating several early chances.

In the 14th minute, Lallianzuala Chhangte broke the deadlock with a stunning long-range strike that left the Singapore goalkeeper rooted to the spot. India continued to dominate possession and came close to doubling their lead when Liston Colaco’s shot was cleared off the line in the 29th minute.

Moments later, Naorem Mahesh Singh had another opportunity after a clever setup from Sunil Chhetri, but his shot went straight to the goalkeeper.

Singapore Fight Back

India looked in control until the final moments of the first half. However, just before the whistle, Singapore’s Song Uiyong equalized with a precise finish into the bottom right corner, silencing the home crowd.

At halftime, the score stood 1-1, leaving both teams with everything to play for in the second half.

Second-Half Struggles

After the break, India struggled to regain their rhythm. Their attacks lacked precision, while Singapore began to dominate possession. In the 52nd minute, Ilhan Fandi almost put Singapore ahead but failed to beat Gurpreet Singh Sandhu in a one-on-one situation.

Six minutes later, Singapore took the lead. Song struck again in the 58th minute, finishing off a neat move with teammates Ikhsan and Anuar. His well-placed shot beat Sandhu at the near post, giving the visitors a 2-1 advantage.

Missed Chances and Substitutions

Coach Khalid Jamil made several substitutions to spark a comeback, bringing in Farukh Choudhary, Sahal Abdul Samad, Rahim Ali, and Udanta Singh for fresh energy. Despite their efforts, India struggled to break down Singapore’s organized defense.

In the final moments, Sahal and Brandon Fernandes had chances to level the score, but their attempts were off-target.

End of Qualification Dream

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh held Hong Kong, China to a 1-1 draw, briefly giving India hope of advancing. However, the defeat against Singapore ended those chances completely.

The loss marked a disappointing end to India’s AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifying campaign, despite showing moments of promise and attacking intent throughout the match.
