Air India flight AI191, flying from Mumbai to Newark, turned back mid-air after the crew detected a possible technical fault on 22 October. The plane landed safely, and engineers are now inspecting it to confirm its airworthiness.
Cause of Return
Sources from CNN News18 said a non-cockpit instrument failure prompted the crew to return immediately. Air India stressed that the incident posed no danger and the action was a routine safety measure.
Flight Cancellations and Passenger Assistance
The incident led to the cancellation of AI191 and its return leg, AI144 from Newark to Mumbai. Air India provided hotel stays for affected passengers in Mumbai. It also rebooked them on alternative Air India or partner flights.
Passengers scheduled on AI144 from Newark were notified of the cancellation. The airline is helping them arrange new travel plans quickly.
Airline Statement
An Air India spokesperson said the airline prioritizes passenger and crew safety. They added that the precautionary return was a standard safety step, not an emergency.
