Landslide in Kenya’s Rift Valley Kills 21, Dozens Missing After Heavy Rains
Heavy rains triggered a deadly landslide in Kenya’s western Rift Valley, killing at least 21 people and leaving 30 others missing as rescue teams continue their search.

A powerful landslide struck the hilly Chesongoch area in Elgeyo Marakwet County, western Kenya, on Saturday. The disaster followed days of intense rainfall during the country’s short rainy season. Officials confirmed that at least 21 people died, while 30 others are still missing.

The landslide unleashed massive mudslides that swept through villages, destroying homes and infrastructure. Over 1,000 houses were flattened, and several major roads were cut off, leaving many communities stranded.

Rescue Efforts Continue Despite Harsh Weather

Government rescue teams have been working non-stop in difficult weather conditions. Emergency crews used helicopters to airlift around 30 seriously injured victims to a hospital in Eldoret City.

Local resident Stephen Kittony described the terrifying moment when the landslide struck. He told Citizen Television, “I heard a deafening noise before rushing outside with my children, fleeing in separate directions as the landslide advanced.”

Government Promises Relocation for Survivors

Authorities said search and rescue operations are still underway as rain continues to fall. Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen confirmed that the government is planning to relocate displaced families to safer areas.

He added that officials are already identifying alternative settlement zones for those who lost their homes.

Region’s History of Disasters

The Chesongoch region, known for its steep slopes and unstable terrain, has faced several similar tragedies in the past. Landslides in 2010 and 2012 claimed dozens of lives, while flooding in 2020 destroyed a local shopping centre.

The latest disaster highlights Kenya’s ongoing struggle with climate-related challenges, as heavy rains continue to cause devastation across the Rift Valley region.
