US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that his administration intends to reduce tariffs as part of ongoing trade negotiations with India. Responding to a question about the talks, Trump said that both countries were “getting close to a fair deal.”
He added that India had faced high tariffs partly because of its oil trade with Russia, but he again claimed that New Delhi has stopped purchasing Russian oil.
“We are bringing down the tariffs”
Speaking about the current trade discussions, Trump said, “We are bringing down the tariffs,” indicating that Washington might ease some trade barriers soon. He suggested that the talks were moving in a positive direction and that the United States was hopeful of reaching a balanced agreement with India.
The US and India have long been negotiating to resolve differences over trade duties, market access, and technology-related exports. Trump’s latest statement reflects optimism about improving economic ties between the two nations.
A step toward a ‘fair deal’
While Trump did not share specific details about which tariffs would be reduced or when, his comments signaled a possible shift in Washington’s approach to India’s trade policies.
He emphasized fairness in trade relations, saying that both sides are working toward a deal that benefits each other. His remarks come at a time when bilateral trade between the two countries continues to expand despite past disputes over tariffs and energy imports.
