Ahmedabad Wins 2030 Commonwealth Games After Tough Global Contest
Ahmedabad will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, bringing the event back to India after 20 years.

Ahmedabad will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. India last hosted the event in 2010 in Delhi. The Games will return to the country after two decades.

The Commonwealth Sport’s Executive Board recommended Ahmedabad last month. The general assembly approved the decision on Wednesday. This edition will mark 100 years of the Commonwealth Games.

Ahmedabad faced strong competition from Abuja in Nigeria. Abuja will now host the 2038 Games.

A Boost for India’s Olympic Bid

India is also trying to host the 2036 Olympics. Winning the 2030 CWG strengthens India’s chances for its Olympic bid.

India Says It Is Honoured

PT Usha welcomed the decision. “We are deeply honoured by the trust shown by Commonwealth Sport. The 2030 Games will not only celebrate a 100 years of the Commonwealth Movement but also lay the foundation for the next century,” she said.

She added, “It will bring together Athletes, communities, and cultures from across the Commonwealth in a spirit of friendship and progress.”

The organising body issued a statement. “The Amdavad 2030 team will work closely with Commonwealth Sport and the International Federation community to shape a dynamic and exciting sport programme with strong local resonance and global appeal,” it said.

Dr Donald Rukare praised India’s strengths. “India brings scale, youth, ambition, rich culture, enormous sporting passion and relevance…We start our next century for the Commonwealth Games in good health,” he said.

2030 Edition Will Feature More Sports

Commonwealth Sport confirmed that 15 to 17 sports will be part of the 2030 Games. This is more than the 2026 edition in Glasgow, which scaled down to 10 sports due to costs.

The confirmed sports include Athletics and Para Athletics, Swimming and Para Swimming, Table Tennis and Para Table Tennis, Bowls and Para Bowls, Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting, Artistic Gymnastics, Netball and Boxing.

Officials will finalise the remaining sports next month. They will announce the full list next year.

The sports under consideration include Archery, Badminton, 3x3 Basketball and 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Cricket T20, Cycling, Diving, Hockey, Judo, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Rugby Sevens, Shooting, Squash, Triathlon and Para Triathlon, and Wrestling.
“The host can also propose up to two new or traditional sports,” the body added.

Major Venues Under Construction

The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave will serve as a key venue. The complex is still under development. It will host several major events during the Games.
