ODI Battle Begins: India Banks on Rohit Kohli Comeback and Fresh Competition
India’s ODI campaign against South Africa begins on 30 November with the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli strengthening the squad amid intense competition for key batting and all-rounder spots.

The three-match ODI series between India and South Africa will begin on 30 November. The return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli boosts India’s chances in the ODI series. India’s Test team has had a turbulent year. Senior players were pushed aside at times, and their replacements performed well on some days and poorly on others. However, the T20 format proved that many of these players still remain mentally, physically, and technically sharp.

KL Rahul welcomed the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. He said, “To have senior players makes the dressing room a lot more confident. They can help the team out. Having a settled team and similar faces helps the dressing room.”

ODIs Remain India’s Strongest Format

India’s batters are most comfortable in the 50-over format. They will play this series without their new captain Shubman Gill and vice-captain Shreyas Iyer. Even so, India has strong options to fill those roles.

At the top, Rohit Sharma will open with Yashasvi Jaiswal. In most teams, Jaiswal would already have several ODI caps by now, not just one. India played him only once, against England in Nagpur before the Champions Trophy, where he fell early before settling in.

Intense Competition for No. 4

India has several choices for Shreyas Iyer’s No. 4 spot. Ruturaj Gaikwad is likely to get the first opportunity instead of Tilak Varma. Rahul also hinted at another possibility. He said, “If Rishabh (Pant) is there, he will take the gloves.”

Selectors including Pant in the squad shows they are not discouraged by his injury history. They appear willing to give him more time to secure his long term ODI place.

Battle for the Spin All Rounder Slot

There is strong competition for the spin all-rounder position. Ravindra Jadeja has returned to replace Axar Patel for the Australia series. Rahul confirmed he will continue at No. 6. Because of that, one of Jadeja, Washington Sundar, or Nitish Reddy could be promoted as a floating batter at No. 5.

With so many players fighting for limited spots, selectors will closely watch every match in the upcoming series.
