A shocking incident unfolded in Sainte-Anne, Guadeloupe, on Friday. A person drove a car into a crowd that was preparing for a Christmas event. As a result, at least 19 people became victims, including 10 who lost their lives.
The incident happened in Schoelcher Square, which sits opposite the town hall and the local church. The busy location made the impact even more severe.
Victims in Critical Condition
According to Radio Caraïbes Internationale Guadeloupe, three victims remain in serious condition. Emergency teams rushed to the spot within minutes to help those injured.
Firefighters, paramedics, and police officers quickly arrived. They began rescue work and secured the area to prevent further harm.
Cause Still Under Investigation
Authorities have not confirmed the cause of the crash yet. However, witnesses at the site told RCI that the driver may have suffered a medical episode while driving. Officials have not verified this claim so far.
The driver stayed at the location after the incident. Police launched an investigation, and they are collecting evidence and witness accounts.
At the same time, the town’s mayor reached the scene and activated a crisis team to support the victims and their families.
Germany Faced a Similar Tragedy Last Year
This incident has reminded many of a similar attack in Germany last year. In Magdeburg, a car drove into a busy Christmas market just days before the festival.
The attack killed at least two people and injured 68 others. Among the injured, 15 suffered very serious wounds, 37 had medium-level injuries, and 16 suffered minor injuries, according to official records.
German police arrested the driver. He was identified as a 50-year-old doctor from Saudi Arabia who first arrived in Germany in 2006, according to the state’s interior minister, Tamara Zieschang.
Officials React to the Horror
City spokesperson Michael Reif described the situation as deeply disturbing. He said, “The pictures are terrible.” He also added, “My information is that a car drove into the Christmas market visitors, but I can’t yet say from what direction and how far.”
These words reflected the confusion and fear that spread through the community.
Rising Safety Concerns Across Europe
These back-to-back incidents have increased concerns about public safety during holiday gatherings. Authorities across Europe are now paying closer attention to security measures at crowded festive locations.
Investigations continue in Guadeloupe, and officials are working to determine the exact reason behind the crash.
