Deadly Fire Sweeps Through Retirement Home in Indonesia, 16 Killed
A late-night fire at a retirement home in Indonesia’s Manado city killed at least 16 elderly residents, with many trapped inside their rooms as the blaze spread rapidly.

A massive fire swept through a retirement home in Manado, a city on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island, killing at least 16 people late Sunday night. The incident left local officials, residents, and families in deep shock.

Fire Breaks Out While Residents Slept

The fire erupted at the Werdha Damai retirement home, where around 30 elderly people were living. Police said many residents were asleep when the blaze started, which made escape difficult for several victims.

Rescue Efforts Fail to Save Many Lives

After receiving the alert, emergency teams rushed to the spot. However, by the time firefighters managed to control the flames, the building had collapsed and turned into debris. Rescue workers and officials are still trying to determine how the fire spread so quickly.

Dramatic Scenes Caught on Camera

Footage aired by local broadcaster Metro TV showed intense flames and thick black smoke rising from the facility. Neighbours and volunteers could be seen trying to help residents escape as the fire consumed the building.

Victims Trapped Inside Rooms

Manado police chief Irham Halid, speaking to Reuters, said most of the victims were trapped inside their rooms and could not get out in time. This made rescue efforts even more challenging.

Cause Still Under Investigation

Authorities have not yet confirmed what caused the fire. Investigators are examining the site to determine whether safety lapses or electrical faults played a role. Meanwhile, officials are focusing on helping injured survivors and supporting the families of those who died.

Community Gathers in Grief

On Monday morning, relatives, neighbours, and local residents gathered near the remains of the retirement home. Many appeared shaken and emotional as they waited for updates and comforted one another.
