Sonia Gandhi Hospitalised With Respiratory Issues, Doctors Say Condition Stable
Congress leader Sonia Gandhi was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital with mild respiratory issues, but doctors say her condition is stable and improving.

Congress leader Sonia Gandhi was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi on Monday evening after she faced breathing-related discomfort, according to multiple reports. ANI said she experienced respiratory issues and was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Doctors admitted her for observation and began treatment soon after her arrival.

Condition Stable, Responding to Treatment

Hospital authorities said doctors have given Sonia Gandhi antibiotics along with other supportive medicines. They confirmed that her condition remains stable and that she is responding well to treatment.

A hospital statement cited by ANI said doctors are closely monitoring her health.

Routine Admission, Say Hospital Officials

Meanwhile, a hospital official told PTI that the admission was routine in nature. The official added that doctors placed her under the care of a chest specialist for observation.

The official also said Sonia Gandhi has a history of chronic cough and regularly visits the hospital for medical check-ups.

Doctors Link Issue to Cold and Pollution

Ajay Swaroop, Chairman of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, explained that doctors carried out a detailed medical examination after her admission. They found that cold weather and Delhi’s poor air quality had mildly worsened her bronchial asthma.

“She was experiencing respiratory discomfort, and upon medical examination, it was found that her bronchial asthma had been mildly exacerbated due to the combined effects of cold weather and pollution. As a precautionary measure, she was admitted for further observation and treatment. At present, her condition is absolutely stable,” Swaroop said in a statement.

Discharge Likely in a Day or Two

Doctors said Sonia Gandhi is showing positive signs of recovery. However, they will decide on her discharge based on her clinical progress.

“At present, her condition is absolutely stable. She is responding well to treatment and is being managed with antibiotics and other supportive medications. The decision regarding her discharge will be taken by the treating physicians based on her clinical progress and is likely in a day or two,” Swaroop added.

Past Health Updates

Sonia Gandhi, who turned 79 last month, has faced health issues in the past as well. In June 2025, doctors admitted her to the same hospital due to a severe stomach infection. She was discharged after four days.

Later that month, she also underwent a routine medical check-up at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital in Shimla.
