US Secret Service agents shot and killed a young man after he entered a restricted zone near President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property in Florida.
Armed Intruder Killed Near Mar-a-Lago
Agents from the United States Secret Service shot and killed a man in his early 20s early Sunday morning after he unlawfully entered a secure area around Mar-a-Lago. The property belongs to US President Donald Trump.
The incident took place at about 1:30 am on February 22. Officers from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office also responded to the scene.
At the time of the shooting, Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were in Washington. No protectees were present at the estate.
Man Entered Restricted Perimeter
According to officials, the man approached the north gate of the West Palm Beach property while carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel can. He then moved into the protected zone.
Authorities said he drove through the gate while another vehicle was exiting. Secret Service agents and a county deputy confronted him. During the encounter, agents opened fire. The man was declared dead at the scene.
The Secret Service confirmed that the individual was “observed by the north gate of the Mar-a-Lago property carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel can” before entering the restricted area.
Investigation Underway
Officials have not officially released the suspect’s name. Reports indicate he was from North Carolina and had been reported missing several days earlier. Investigators believe he travelled south from North Carolina and obtained a shotgun during the journey. The box for the firearm was found inside his vehicle.
No Secret Service agents or sheriff’s deputies were injured in the incident.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Secret Service, and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office are conducting a joint investigation. They are examining the suspect’s background, movements, and possible motive.
Although Trump often spends weekends at Mar-a-Lago, he and the First Lady were at the White House in Washington when the shooting occurred.
