After two days of intense search operations, the United States successfully recovered the second crew member from a downed F-15E fighter jet during a high-risk mission involving Iran.
According to American officials, the rescue took place after a “heavy firefight”. They confirmed the development while speaking to Al Jazeera.
Trump Confirms Daring Rescue Operation
US President Donald Trump later confirmed the rescue in a post on Truth Social.
“WE GOT HIM! My fellow Americans, over the past several hours, the United States Military pulled off one of the most daring Search and Rescue Operations in U.S. History,” Trump wrote late Saturday night.
Race Between US and Iran to Locate Pilot
The rescue followed a tense race between the United States and Iran to find the missing crew member, who was a weapons officer on board the aircraft.
The jet had been flying over Iran during a military mission when it was shot down. The first pilot had already been rescued on Friday, but the second crew member remained missing until this operation.
During the search, Iranian authorities reportedly announced a reward for anyone who could capture and hand over the pilot alive. Meanwhile, the White House avoided making public statements until the rescue was completed.
‘Safe and Sound’ After High-Risk Mission
Trump shared further details in a post shortly after midnight, praising the rescued officer.
He described the airman as an “incredible” individual and noted that he was “SAFE and SOUND!” The president also revealed that the officer is a highly respected Colonel.
“This brave Warrior was behind enemy lines in the treacherous mountains of Iran, being hunted down by our enemies, who were getting closer and closer by the hour, but was never truly alone because his Commander in Chief, Secretary of War, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and fellow Warfighters were monitoring his location 24 hours a day, and diligently planning for his rescue,” Trump wrote.
Massive Military Effort Behind Rescue
Trump said the operation was carried out under his direct orders, involving significant military resources. “At my direction, the US Military sent dozens of aircraft, armed with the most lethal weapons in the World, to retrieve him.”
He added that the rescued airman had suffered some injuries in the crash but “will be just fine.”
Rescue Mission Faced Enemy Fire
The operation was not without danger. During the rescue, Iranian fire hit a US helicopter that was carrying the recovered pilot and other crew members. Some personnel were injured, but the helicopter managed to land safely.
In another incident, an A-10 Warthog aircraft involved in the mission also came under fire. Its pilot had to eject over the Persian Gulf but was later rescued safely, according to officials.
High-Stakes Operation Amid Rising Tensions
The mission highlights the high-risk environment in which US forces are operating amid ongoing tensions with Iran. The successful rescue, despite enemy fire and difficult terrain, marks a significant moment in the conflict.
