Croatia stayed in the race for a place in the last 32 of the FIFA World Cup after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama in Toronto. The win gave Croatia their first points in Group L and boosted their chances of reaching the knockout stage.
The 2018 World Cup runners-up now know that a victory against Ghana in their final group match on Saturday will guarantee progression to the next round. Ghana earlier played out a goalless draw against England.
Budimir Delivers Crucial Winner
The decisive moment came early in the second half when substitute Ante Budimir found the net. Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic made two attacking substitutions at halftime after being unhappy with his team's performance in the opening 45 minutes.
One of those changes paid off almost immediately. Nine minutes into the second half, Budimir met a low cross from Josip Stanisic at the far post and calmly guided the ball into the net. The goal proved enough to secure all three points and ended Panama's hopes of staying alive in the tournament.
Panama Cause Problems Early
Panama made life difficult for Croatia during the first half. Their pace and energy in attack troubled the Croatian defense and prevented the European side from finding any rhythm going forward.
The opening period ended without a goal as Panama matched Croatia's intensity and created moments of danger. Recognizing the need for improvement, Dalic reshaped his attack during the break, a decision that ultimately changed the match.
Historic Night for Luka Modric
The victory made captain Luka Modric's 200th international appearance even more memorable. The 40-year-old midfielder became only the fourth male footballer to reach the milestone while also competing in his fifth World Cup.
Modric once again demonstrated his quality in midfield. He completed 88 percent of his passes and continued a remarkable record of achieving at least an 80 percent pass completion rate in all 19 of his World Cup appearances. After being substituted in the 81st minute, Modric received a warm celebration from his teammates, who lifted him into the air following the final whistle.
Dalic Praises Croatia Captain
Following the match, Dalic paid tribute to his captain and highlighted his continuing importance to the national team. "He is still influencing matches and to play for your country 200 times, that is a lot. We need to be very happy to have him in the team."
The coach also praised Modric's character and humility. "Luka is very humble and this is why he is not for major celebrations. But I am very glad we marked this today in front of our fans."
Livakovic Protects Croatia's Lead
Panama had opportunities to equalize and keep their World Cup campaign alive. However, Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic produced several important saves, especially during a hectic period before the second-half hydration break.
His quick reactions and composure under pressure prevented Panama from finding a way back into the match. Those saves ensured Croatia maintained their narrow advantage until the final whistle.
Knockout Race Goes Down to Final Match
The result leaves Croatia in a strong position heading into the final round of Group L matches. A win against Ghana in Philadelphia on Saturday will secure a place in the knockout rounds.
Meanwhile, Panama have lost both of their opening matches and have been eliminated from contention. They will conclude their World Cup campaign against England in New Jersey.
Croatia now head into their final group game with momentum and confidence, while Panama's World Cup journey is set to end after a determined but unsuccessful campaign.
