FIFA World Cup 2026: Mexico Cruise Past Czechia to Finish Group Stage Perfectly
Mexico completed a perfect Group A campaign with a 3-0 victory over the Czechia, as goals from Mateo Chavez, Julian Quinones and Alvaro Fidalgo secured top spot and knocked the Europeans out of the World Cup.

Mexico completed a flawless Group A campaign by defeating Czechia 3-0 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 in Mexico City, securing their third consecutive victory and finishing the group stage with maximum points.

The co-hosts had already guaranteed first place in the group after earlier wins over South Africa and South Korea. With qualification already secured, head coach Javier Aguirre took the opportunity to rotate his squad, and several fringe players rewarded his faith with impressive performances.

The defeat ended the Czechia's World Cup journey, with the Europeans finishing bottom of Group A with just one point from three matches.

Chavez Scores First International Goal

One of the standout performers for Mexico was left-back Mateo Chavez, who was among five changes made to the starting lineup. The young defender produced a memorable moment shortly after the break when he scored his first goal for the national team.

Chavez showed excellent composure inside the penalty area before calmly finding the back of the net to give Mexico a deserved lead early in the second half. His goal rewarded Mexico's dominance and put the hosts firmly in control of the contest.

Teenage Sensation Mora Impresses Again

Much of the attention before the match focused on 17-year-old midfielder Gilberto Mora, who received his first start of the tournament. The teenager delivered another mature performance and played a key role in Mexico's second goal.

Mora threaded a perfectly timed pass to Jorge Sanchez, who raced through on goal. Although goalkeeper Matej Kovar initially denied Sanchez, the Czech defense failed to clear the danger.

After a frantic scramble inside the six-yard box, Julian Quinones reacted quickest and poked the loose ball into the net. The goal was Quinones' second of the tournament and doubled Mexico's advantage.

Mora Makes World Cup History

Mora's inclusion in the starting lineup also placed him in the record books. At 17 years and 253 days old, he became the sixth-youngest player ever to start a men's World Cup match.

He also became the youngest Mexican player in history to start a World Cup game. The talented midfielder received a standing ovation from the crowd when he left the field after 72 minutes following an impressive display.

Fidalgo Caps Off Dominant Victory

Mexico continued to attack after establishing a two-goal lead. Mora's replacement, Alvaro Fidalgo, made an immediate impact by scoring the team's third goal.

The midfielder struck a superb effort from 15 yards out, sending the ball into the top corner and putting the result beyond doubt. The goal completed a comfortable evening for the hosts and highlighted the depth available within Aguirre's squad.

Ochoa Receives Hero's Welcome

While the goals thrilled the home supporters, one of the loudest cheers of the night came late in the match. Veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa entered the game as a substitute and received a huge ovation from the crowd at Azteca Stadium.

The 40-year-old is currently participating in his sixth World Cup campaign, matching the achievements of football icons Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Although Ochoa appeared in only four of those tournaments, having remained an unused squad member in 2006 and 2010, his introduction became one of the most emotional moments of the evening.

Mexico Look Ahead to Knockout Stage

Mexico now head into the Round of 32 full of confidence after winning all three group matches. The co-hosts finished Group A with a perfect record and will play their knockout match in Mexico City on July 1 against one of the tournament's best third-placed teams.

Meanwhile, the Czechia leave the competition after a disappointing campaign that produced only one point from three matches. Mexico's strong performances throughout the group stage have established them as one of the tournament's in-form teams as they prepare for the knockout rounds.
