Ireland defeated India by 34 runs in the first T20I of the two-match series in Belfast. The T20 world champions struggled in unfamiliar conditions as Ireland successfully defended 183 runs to seal a famous victory.
The larger boundaries, lively pitch and absence of the Impact Player rule made life difficult for India. Ireland made the most of the conditions with captain Lorcan Tucker leading from the front, while debutant fast bowlers Matt Hollard and Jai Moondra produced outstanding performances to complete the upset.
Harshit Rana Impresses on His Return
Harshit Rana made a strong comeback after spending four months out with a knee injury. He immediately exploited the pace and movement available in Belfast. Rana mixed short deliveries with accurate yorkers and constantly troubled the Irish batters.
One of his slower balls tempted Tucker into a powerful shot, but it landed safely in the hands of a fielder. Rana finished with impressive figures of 3/24 and once again showed why India value his ability to produce breakthroughs.
Tucker Anchors Ireland's Innings
Ireland found themselves under pressure after slipping to 36/3 at the end of the powerplay. Captain Lorcan Tucker responded with a calm and responsible innings. He focused on staying at the crease rather than attacking every ball.
At one stage, Tucker had scored only five runs from 11 deliveries. However, he remained patient until Gareth Delany provided valuable support from the other end. Delany scored an aggressive 49 off 32 balls, allowing Tucker to play more freely later in the innings.
Tucker eventually completed his half-century in 35 balls and became the first player in men's T20 internationals to score a fifty in each of his first three matches as captain.
India's Bowling Plans Backfire
Stand-in captain Shreyas Iyer returned to India's T20 side after more than two and a half years. After winning the toss, he recognised the helpful conditions for fast bowlers and used Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh throughout the powerplay. However, that strategy left India short of options in the final overs.
Washington Sundar conceded 19 runs in the 16th over, while Prasidh Krishna endured another difficult outing by giving away 27 runs in the 17th over. He finished with figures of 0/57 after conceding 0/68 in his previous T20 international appearance three years earlier.
Axar Patel and Arshdeep Singh controlled the final three overs well and helped restrict Ireland from posting an even bigger total.
Abhishek Sharma Starts Aggressively
Abhishek Sharma gave India early momentum with another explosive innings. He dominated through the off side, where six of his nine boundaries came. Ireland repeatedly bowled in his preferred areas before adjusting their plans.
Once the bowlers attacked straighter lines, Abhishek mistimed a shot to deep midwicket and fell for a quick 49 off only 20 balls. His dismissal shifted the momentum towards Ireland.
Ireland's Debutants Turn the Match
Ireland's debutant fast bowlers produced a dream start to their international careers. Jai Moondra had plenty of support in the crowd, with family and friends displaying banners reading, "Moondra hai toh mumkin hai."
The left-arm seamer made an immediate impact by bowling Sanju Samson for just five runs. Matthew Hollard enjoyed an even better debut. He dismissed Ishan Kishan with only his second ball in international cricket before removing captain Shreyas Iyer for just three runs.
Ireland then completely controlled the middle overs. They conceded only two boundaries in the 27 balls after the powerplay and steadily increased the pressure on India's batters.
Tilak Varma fell while attempting a reverse sweep, leaving India struggling at 90/5 after 10.2 overs. Hollard later dismissed Washington Sundar for nine, effectively ending India's hopes of chasing the target.
