Heavy rain hit Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Thursday morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for several parts of the national capital. It warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning.

The IMD also placed Noida and Ghaziabad under an orange alert. It forecast moderate rain with thunderstorms in both cities. Meanwhile, Gurugram and Faridabad remain under a yellow alert. The weather department expects light rainfall over the next few hours.

IMD Places Several Delhi Areas Under Red Alert

Delhi woke up to widespread rain on Thursday. The showers continued across many parts of the city. The IMD issued a red alert for North East Delhi, Central Delhi, South East Delhi, South Delhi, New Delhi and Shahdara. It warned that heavy rainfall could continue until at least 12 pm. The department also forecast thunderstorms and lightning in these areas.

Noida and Ghaziabad Under Orange Alert

The IMD placed Noida and Ghaziabad under an orange alert. It expects moderate rain and thunderstorms in both cities. Gurugram and Faridabad remain under a yellow alert. The IMD expects light rain in these districts.

Gurugram Police Ask Offices to Allow Work From Home

Gurugram Police issued an advisory as heavy rain threatened to cause waterlogging and traffic jams. The police asked corporate offices and private companies to allow employees to work from home wherever possible. They said fewer vehicles on the roads would help traffic personnel manage congestion better. It would also ensure smooth movement for emergency vehicles.

"We strongly urge the corporate sector and private establishments to extend the work-from-home facility to their employees for today. Reduced traffic on the roads will help our traffic management teams regulate vehicle movement more effectively and ensure uninterrupted access for emergency services," Gurugram Police Public Relations Officer Sandeep Turan said.
